Folding or compact bikes

Hi Does anyone have any experience with folding or compact bikes? They look a bit awkard so I'm not sure how practical they are, but I would only want one so I could park the car a bit out of town for free and then cycle in, so not very far. In my experience, the budget models are not really that great - you need to spend a minimum of 600 euro to get a decent one, I think.
