Just a head's up.. it's on the european stores now, 942MB.

Impressions I've read from the 360 demo have been pretty mixed, so I'm kind of eager to see for myself.

On a different note, Sony's releasing a Killzone 2 demo this thursday on the euro stores.

Seems to be a good couple of weeks before the demo is due in the US - something early, for once!

Much more interested in this little tidbit.

I have played the 360 demo and it is, well, pretty much the exact same as RE4. While this is not necessarily a bad thing, RE4 is four years old. Other games, (GOW2, Dead Space) have done the control scheme much better since so it seems odd that RE5 shows no progression at all.

I downloaded the demo and played it for a bit. The controls are horrid, now I understand the tank controls that people mention.
Turn the direction you want to move right stick, then move with left stick. I frequently end up looking at the roof to free-look when instead I'm trying to aim and shoot.
Oh yeah, you can't run and shoot at the same time.

That was the same story in RE4 was it not? Super game, although I've yet to download the demo for 5.

Played the 360 demo and was a bit disappointed but I'll reserve judgment till the completed game comes out.

    More interested in Killlzone 2....

I thought it was enjoyable, although I agree that there isn't much progression from RE4 - feels more like an extension. I don't think the controls were too different from RE4 either; I was expecting it to be much worse from the criticism it's gotten so far (although the not being able to move and aim is a tad annoying alright, I used it quite a bit in the last game in quiet areas).

I haven't figured out whether or not I like having to toggle the equipment menu in game - it adds a bit of panic, especially when the new Dr. Salvador comes running at you with the chainsaw.

I must say I foundit very enjoyable, sure it is similiar to re4 but halfway tru the demo I realised thats no bad thing.

The tense slowly built up horror is gone but I admitto being rather scared during the seige in one of the demo's locations. Bring on Killzone.

I thought I read somewhere that this new demo (as opposed to the Japan-only one) gave you a choice between the classic controls (where you can't move and shoot) and new "action" controls, where you can move and shoot... Haven't DLed this yet to check though, I played the Japanese version on the Xbox a couple of months ago and wasn't too impressed.

Killzone 2 demo... that's more like it :D.

Im all for "if it aint broke, dont fix it", but the controls seem to have taken a step backward, the default controls anyway. In a game like this, you simply should be able to walk/run and shoot at the same time. So far its all good tho, very similar to RE4, but i could do without the rescource sharing :P

It's good but I don't like the way that it doesn't pause when the inventory is open. I got my head cut off fiddling about with it! Won't stop me from buying it though.

love the graphics ,going to get killzone first though. Just incase killzone takes up a lot of time:)

There's a lot of RE5 bashing going on in the Xbox forum, I've been defending it with great enthusiasm though! Is it nerdy to download it, even though I've got the 360 demo? I wanna compare...

I didn't like the first Killzone much, but I only ever played for a few minutes. I'll give the demo of 2 a go, see if I come around!

Just after playing the demo and I have to say I'm disappointed with it, I don't like the "stop & shoot" control, it's too slow, and the viewing angle is a bit off putting .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 728 ✭✭✭Nexus

Didnt like it, Thought the stop and shooot ruined it for me. Also when you have the knife out and they attack from the left you cant see ****!. I did however think the graphics were excellent, was really impressed with them.

Same here, which is a pity as it looks really nice.

Yeah totally agree with you there, it feels totally unnatural not being able to move and shoot, breaks up the pace of the action very badly.... Hope they "fix" the shíte camera controls too :S

does anyone think that the aiming is like dead space ?
it seemed to work a lot better in dead space though.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,407 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Thats because Dead Space copied the controls and camera from Resident Evil 4.

Ah ,I see. last time I played resident evil it was on the ps1.

    +1

It worked well for Dead Space, shame it's not the same for RE5 as it looks like it could be a good game.

thing is this kind of aiming worked for dead space as you where usually in confined spaces and your weapons had a great spread of fire. Plus even if you where using the machine gun you could just stasis the baddie to give you time to get your aim right.

I'm surprised though that they haven't got the aiming right. I was hoping for something like Gears over the shoulder system which is excellent. RE4 was an excellent game but the aiming and moving was just irritating.

I can tell you one thing, this game is going to be another horrible PC port for anyone hoping to play it with a KB&M

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,407 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I'm not sure about that. It's using the same engine that powered DMC4 and Lost Planet which means the game was developed on PC first and ported over. I'd say it will be a pretty decent port this time.

RE4 didn't even have mouse support so I suppose anything will be an improvement over that.

I liked the demo. Its pretty much a reskin of Resident Evil 4 with prettier graphics. The controls don't bother me though. Got use to them quick. Wonder though will it simply be deja vu when the full game is released.

With regards Capcom and PC ports, Resident Evil 4 was an awful port (saved by the hardwork of the modding community) but apparantly Lost Planet Colonies Edition and Devil May Cry 4 where well made on the PC. The only bad thing I will say about the Lost Planet game is that the menu's still had the Xbox in mind but other than that it was fine. As for Devil May Cry 4 even without moust support its a better game on the PC than the two console version with better graphics, perfect widescreen support, proper anti-aliasing and DX 10 support higher frame rates and exclusive gameplay modes. I can also tell you that Bionic Commando Reamred on PC was as good as the console versions. As for Resident Evil 5 on PC although not offically confirmed a German game magazine claimed it was due for release in Q4 2009 and most recently CD Projket (Polish publishers) have said they will publish the PC version in the second half of 2009. While apparantly 1C have the rights to publish the PC version in Russia.

I see Capcom are now on the board of the PC Gaming Alliance Group as well.

it's going to take a while before I get used to these controls again, whoever thought to make you glue to the spot when holding a knife or trying to shoot is a moron. It is RE4 all over again, but I guess the gap has been long enough that I've gotten used to the bonus of being able to control an individual that can hold a knife and move his feet at the same time

I hope they include sensitivity options with the final release so that you can change the camera rotation speed. I also hope they allow you to set run as default and have x assigned to walk.

It wouldn't be half as scary if you could run and shoot at the same time.

Still what I wouldn't give for another Resi game set in an isolated mansion!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 524 ✭✭✭Penis Eye

i would like to see the aimin more like uncharted. like a lot of ppl the stop and shoot thing really pissed me off. thought the graphics were ace. and the atmosphear was pretty good too but wasnt sure if that was anticaption of the game or the game itself if u know wot i mean!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 973 ✭✭✭Super Sidious

since when could you run and shoot in resi?

maybe im mistaken, but ive played resident evil since the first one 13years ago and you've never been able to run and shoot... id rather this game didn't turn into another shoot em up... its always been so much more than that...

thought the demo was class and guarantee its a 10/10 game!

They shouldn't be relying on the inability to move and shoot to make the game scary. It was ok in 96 but it's an outdated system now.

FFS, when will people get over this? I'm sick of hearing about it. It's a design choice!!!! You have to strategically decide when to stop shooting and move to a better position. Also, a question for you and all the others, which is more accurate, standing and firing a pistol or running around the place and doing so. And don't bother countering with 'if there were zombies around I'd be moving'.

It's a game, and the designers implemented stop and shoot.

    Don't like it, tough sh1t!

Well it's obviously a design choice that they realised was wrong because they've added an option to move and shoot to the final version of the game.

No, to use the knife you are required to hold the same button you use to aim, hence no moving.

I'm more used to playing RE with a playstation controller. I've only tried the 360 demo. Perhaps the PS version will feel a little better then.

It's not very good, not being able to run and shoot at the same time is stupid, as is the game not pausing when you go into your inventory.

Very slow paced as well, I thought these zombies could run!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,884 ✭✭✭grumpytrousers

i'd agree that the inventory/no-pause thing sucks balls. however, stop and shoot is what makes it different to other shoot-em-ups. With all due respect, if you want something along the lines of Resistance/CoD or whatever that's more focussed on the shooting and a more breakneck pace, Resident Evil just might not be for you.

I wasn't mad about it not pausing when I went to the inventory, but it keeps the pace going and makes things a bit more challenging. I was playing 4 recently and going the inventory screen really breaks up the gameplay and it feels less frantic. Having to plan when you're gonna heal and swap items is kinda cool!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,498 ✭✭✭wayne040576

I tried the ps3 version today. I think the controller type c is the best for me. It's pretty much a replica of the classic RE controls but with the ability to rotate the camera with the second stick.

I tried the type A control which is the full classic system but the inability to rotate the camera made it too frustrating. It's ok when there are no enemies but I kept running into walls during the fighting sequences.

No your not, ill wait for the full version to come out and then see what its like but at the moment i dont think ill like it.

    Slow
    Dodgy controls
    End of level bosses

    all leave me uninterested.

You lot are not true fans of Resi...

Why do people want to change this into other games already out... its been around since PS1 and its always been good!

Controls and camera angles have always been the difineing point...

Stop hating the demo wait for the game it will be amazing!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 798 ✭✭✭Plascebo

Have been waiting for ever for this game to be released.

Downloaded the demo and wasn't disappointed (scared s**tless but not disappointed).

Played the mob scene first with the Type-D controller layout and got very panicky very quickly, couldn't see where I was running to, shooting blindly etc etc). So played the shanty scene next and loved it. Tried with the Type-C layout but went back to D straight away. It is true Resi gameplay. I think the camera-angle - movement etc. adds to the atmosphere and sheer panic.

Oh, and how do you kill the chain-saw guy (thought I killed him in 4?:))
