With perfect timing, during one of the biggest snowfalls in the past 17 years, my gas boiler decides to die.

Anyone have a ball-park figure on how much new household gas boilers cost?

What's the problem? Is it gas or oil? What makes you think that it is beyond repair?

FWIW, I bought a new condensor boiler (gas) for €1100 (plus fitting) in October 2008. I've actually saved a few quid on gas already.

I did mention that it's a gas boiler twice!

It's about 10 years old now, had various problems with it over the last two years. A plumber mate of mine said the PCB was screwed and that it was impossible to fix. It keeps cutting out just as it's about to fire up.

Apologies - so you did. I'm gonna have to stop speed reading!

Have you tried to source a new PCB? Contact the boiler manufacturer - they may be able to point you in right direction.

You are indeed correct Sir! The PCB is fooked, it's a 12-year old rebadged Ranbaxy and parts are impossible to get.

It's probably a good idea to get a newer and more efficient boiler anyways, any recommendations and ideas on cost?

I got one of these a few months ago. It cost me €1100 from Heatmerchants which includes a standard flue. I've no idea how much it would be to install as the fitting cost was part of a house extension.

It works fine, is relatively quiet and heats the house more efficiently that the 20 year old Potterton Netaheat that it replaced.

There are cheaper boilers out there. Browse the Heatmerchants catalog for more boilers/prices.

Our plumber quoted us €1,900 to fit and install a Baxi boiler next Monday.

Hopefully the house insurance will cover it.
