Does this quote seem expensive to you?

Hi, just wondering if anyone here can tell me if the quote I received was expensive or fair.

I just had my NCT and I brought the results page to my local garage to get a quote for fixing it.

    The problems were are follows:

    1. Worn ball joints on (a) nearside front (left) & (b) Offside front (right)

    2. Exhaust System/Noise - Exhaust Assembly
    (a) Leaking - Middle Front
    (b) Leaking - Middle
    (c) Leaking - Nearside Rear

    1. The mechanic said that he would replace the ball joints and the cost would be €82 + VAT each for parts with the total coming to €312 in total for parts and labour and another €65 for tracking.

    2. He said for the exhaust he would weld the hole in the front & middle and put a new exhaust in the rear for €277.

Total for job: 1. Ball joints: €377 for replacement & tracking.
    2. Exhaust: €277.

    Bill Grand total: €654

I just want to know if anyone here thinks this is a fair price of if I'm being ripped off. I need to get the job done asap so I can resit the NCT within the month.

    Thanks!

What kind of car is it?

It seems slightly high to me but then my mechanic is a friend so may not be charging me full whack, I still feel you are being charged slightly high and if you shopped around you might get it lower but seeing as your in a rush that isn't an option

Hi, thanks for the reply. It's a Peugeot 206.

Ball joint prices are very high. Should cost less than half of that.

Also 1/2 hour labour should fit them.

For me exchaust seems expensive to fix,

and I am not sure if welding it is that a good idea, might be only temporary fix.

For ball joints, well nothing new under the sun. Every french car I know, both Renault and Peugeot always had issues with ball joints and whisbones.

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated. I've been ringing around a few places and getting the old 'I'll get back to you tomorrow' story. Anyway I'll keep looking.

Does anyone know any decent garages on the Northside that won't rip you off?

    Cheer again for the help.

Ball joint price is spot on as the ball joints are intergrated with the wishbones on the 206, so the task here is replacing 2 new wishbones.

As for arsing around with welding an exhaust, I'd just replace it instead. The price for the welding job seems a bit high...

Half that on Twenga , each , including delivery !

Thanks everyone, was just looking at Twenga - excellent, will buy the parts here and just go for a new exhaust system.

don't foget to factor delivery and whether a garage will supply parts you supply in.
