I was wondering how a new car like an Audi actually gets here from the plant in Germany and how long it takes to get here.

By land and boat. Takes a couple of weeks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,943 ✭✭✭Tropheus

AFAIK, they come by boat through Wexford. I bought my Audi new in 2003 and it took two weeks from factory to dealer IIRC.

I was sorta guessing at by Train to a port but from reading on other forums it appears its hit and miss whether they use normal scheduled ferries or on a transporter.

Having driven over the east link and seen the numerous car transporter ships in I was wondering who use what ports etc.

    They're sent through the post.

If you pay extra, DHL promise next day delivery.

Got a good smile from that one....:D

Not all cars come in thru Rosslare. Renault have their own depo down there, massive place, must be a thousand + cars sitting in it. They come in on a ferry from France.

Likewise with NVD, They get a good few different brands in, again its a massive yard, possibly bigger than Renaults.

AFAIK, Ford come in thru Cork, and BMW into Dublin.

I used to sit down on the pier down there when i was younger watching all the new cars being driven off the boats. No more days like that for a long time me thinks......:(

Go down to the Dublin/Rosslare road in Cork or out at Cork port and see all the Ford cars lined up with nobody to buy them.

    Japanese cars come through Dublin.

Does anybody remember the transport ship from Germany that sank in the British Channel? Everybody waiting on cars was very disapointed.

    On collecting your car.

Dont the dealers have to set your car up when it arrives so if you collect it from the factory offices then it wont be set up correctly for our roads. I could be wrong of course.

I see the new BMW's flying through Munich on what seems like never ending high speed trains. Its an amazing sight, doesn't matter how many times, its soooo cool.

Nah, those are just normal trains, they just appear "high speed" compared to Irish ones :D

My A6 was built week 4, shipped last week and arrived in Dublin Thursday. Dealer expects have have it this week, so about 2 weeks from manufacture to delivery IF it makes the boat. I'd imagine they won't be quite so frequent now.

New Ross used to get cars in too. Fiat, Renault and BMW into Rosslare, Ford into Cork, Toyota in Dublin.

Pick the car up yourself in Germany and enjoy the road trip. Then its road, ferry, road, stuck in the snow, road, ferry, stuck on the Irish sea, road, home. Takes no time at all. :D

My GF's mum did that with her last couple cars from the Renault factory, its a bit annoying because you can't hockey the car out of it as its brand new.

    .

There is probably less demand than usual on the factory stock so they can build and ship quicker to their orders than ever before.

You may be happy but I bet the factories accountants are not. ;)

Blimey, Audi must still be doing ok, I certainly didn't expect them to have a ship again so quickly. I just can't believe it takes longer to get from Dublin to Cork to me than it does from the factory to Dublin:confused:

Which one did you go for? I ordered a White SE 2.0TDi. Can wait to get my hands on it now.:D

Black 2.0d 170bhp with extras didn't like the spec of either SE or Sport offering.

Nice. I couldn't turn down the SE spec with the leather, Bluetooth, voice etc. Wouldn't have minded getting a bit more power, but 136BHP is half again my Passat and that was plenty for me.

Have leather on current car and its too cold in winter too hot in summer but thank god for heated seats in winter.

I also had no need for the bluetooth.

    I want one of those!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,132 ✭✭✭bazzachazza

    Thanks both.

I have wanted one of these for the last 2-3 years. Only been able to afford it cause they changed the VRT and the cars price dropped. Mind you its the only benefit of the VRT change.

Thanks, I'm on both quiet often. Have you ever seen a car transport train, its not exactly the same as the BOB or ICE trains.

    Well I found the answer.

Train from Ingolstadt to Emden where it appears VW/AUDI have a large Train/Ship transport hub http://aisserver.yachtmarine.com/EU-EMDEN%20PORT.html .

Ship used was Australian Highway http://www.aisliverpool.co.uk/showship.php?mmsi=353631000

The A6 is made in the Neckarsulm factory apparently, but I presume they have big transport links there too. Mine apparently contrived to arrived in Ringsakiddy. If the garage in Fermoy get it early tomorrow, I should have it on Thursday.

Thanks guys. Must admit, I was bricking it until I saw it, then I was blown away. So glad I went for the white.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,661 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

Very nice, the chrome on the handles is a nice touch.
However if I was going for white, it would have been these rims:

Yes like the chrome detail myself. Funny about the alloys actually....while I was waiting a black A6 that had been up yesterday pulled out. Beautiful "angled" alloys on her (can't even find them on the Audi website??) Anyhoo, was talking to the Sales manager and I said how nice the alloys were....
"Yes, he picked her up yesterday evening, picked the alloys as an option - doesn't like them, and was over seeing what he could do about changing them"

    Oh, dear......

I'd say the doors can cope well enough, the manufacturers would expect them to be banged frequently enough. Not so sure about the boot though.

...nah, they're high speed recovery trains, bringing 7 series back for software updates overnight, so you'd have them back for going to work in the a.m. :D:D

We had problems with ordering iPod connection cables before (they were taking 3-4 weeks to arrive). Our parts dept. made a decision to stock them as a standard part, so we normally have one in stock.

If you're stuck for one, PM me and I'll see if we have one here.

I delivered a very similar car to a customer today - A6 Std 2.0TDi 170BHP Manual. I delivered it to his work, so I got to drive it a bit.
It's the first time I've driven the 170 in the A6, I thought it suited it well. I hope you enjoy your new bus Bazza, I'm pretty sure you will!

Just heard that my new Opel has been built and will soon be shipped.

Any rough estimates on how long that takes to get from Germany??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,035 ✭✭✭✭-Chris-

For Audi it takes 2-3 weeks from build to delivery. I'd assume it's the same for Opel - same distance etc.
