Go to the VRO, get the figure, go to the bank, get the draft.;)

    From the revenue website

Vehicle Registration Tax may be paid by:
You can pay by bankdraft, money order, or laser debit card. Please note that laser debit card payments are subject to a limit of €1500. Unguaranteed cheques may also be accepted in payment subject to the following conditions:

The payer's name, the name on the cheque and the name of the owner of the vehicle being registered must be the same.
The payers PPS No. must be written on the back of the cheque.
Photographic proof of the payer's identity must be provided, (e.g. passport, driver's licence)

Make it out to "Revenue Commissioners". If you are unsure what they will charge, go first, get the amount. Then go to the bank and get the draft made. Best yet, if you know roughly what it will be, get a draft made out to the RC for a little less. Any excess (up to €1,500) can be paid with a Laser card. (if you have one.)

Leather seats and the bluetooth for sure. The parking sensors are standard on the SE.

Mine came back with around €400 extra for tinted reaer windows, CD changer and bluetooth. Expect to pay a pretty penny for the leather. You can get a letter of the VRO to say you have presented your car and they are checking to avoid hassle with the Gardai

ive just been up, late 05 320d car, has loads of extras no extra charge. didnt even look at the car. I think it was because it was 10 mins from lunch time. they were working so slow and it took them about 1 hour to get through 9 people, as soon as it came close to lunch 3 extra people appeared on the counter and they rushed everyone through....happys days

Get a quote online, get a draft for that amount and then pay for the extras on your laser card.... Did you not check for a quote online before you bought the car?

Let me get this right. You are telling us that the revenue charged you extra for having a tinted rear window and a cd player??? Are you having a giraffe or what????

Yup, they take the chassis number, see what extras are on it, find the cost of these, depreciate them and then add it to your bill. You can be lucky though, as a previous poster indicated, if your officer is clueless/on their first day or they are a bit busy.

I have brought shed loads of cars into santry im telling you now a tinted rear window and cd player is not an extra!!! also rear windows with a tint over 70% AFAIK ARE illegal. Would of tol them them to feck off

So you got the quote and though "sure they wont charge me that much..."?

Have you not read the countless threads about VRT quotes - they'll screw you however they can. I'd say at this rate you'd get a better deal in Ireland if your car has 9k worth of extras!

well i took that chance. but i hada couple factors that played in my favour, crap weather, lunchtime and i was super nice at the counter when loads of people were ripping their heads off for the delay. there was a girl 4 people ahead of me with a merc and she got the treatment big time, your man had the calculator out totting up the extras and he went out to the car. i know i was lucky but hey im not the only one, its hit and miss.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 219 ✭✭rgunning

I think he is trying to say he already got away with it! I agree with you though Steve, there are too many people who get screwed in this way and then feel agrieved. Even more who bizarrely don't even budget for it.

But I'd have to pick you up on the "you'd get a better deal in Ireland" comment....

rgunning is referring to privacy glass and a cd changer, both of which were BMW factory options.

I think anyone buying a BMW at the moment is mad to be importing considering there's BMW garages importing from the UK at the moment - see the Frank Keane thread.

There's a good chance that the value of these cars is going to fall dramatically over the next few weeks as more and more are brought in.

Yes I am aware that a cd player is an option but it not an extra!. Leather seats, dvd player, heated seats, hud, would be considered an extra up to 4 years old. But as rgunning did not mention the year, make of his car i seriously doubt the revenue charged heim for having a cd player in his car!! if that was the case do you think people would bring their cars into the vro with the cd player in it?? I doubt it...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,785 ✭✭✭Farls

    1. Locate your tax book for the vehicle you wish to import.
    2. Go to revenue.ie and search for the VRT4 form. Print this out.
    3. Go to ros.ie and find the price of VRT using the vrt calc. Print this out.
    4. Fill in the VRT4 form in accorance with points 1 and 2.
    5. Go to bank/CU etc and get bank draft made out to the "Revenue Commissioners" for the amount shown on 3.
    6. Put all in an envelope and registered post to your nearest VRT office, contact details found on revenue.ie with a simple search.

    Possible problems.

    1. It takes a while to get your new reg and receipt back (1-3 weeks).
    2. Registered post is only insured for up to 2k.
    3. You MIGHT get asked to bring the vehicle in for further inspection.

I've done this countless times for myself, family and people I know...no problems and no extras to report.

rgunning said CD changer, not CD player. Both the CD changer and privacy glass are optional extras. You don't seem too clear on what an optional extra is, it's an option that costs extra. As such, both are liable for VRT on newer cars.

Well As someone who HAS dealt with the revenue I am aware of what a optional extra is. However in my dealings with revenue i have never been charged for a cd player or a (removeable) cd changer. Then again i suppose its how you treat people. Then again he could name and shame them on a public forum like some people do , then again.....

You see, pipsqueak, you will only be charged for a CD changer if

i.) It's an optional extra, not standard.

    and

ii.) The car is relatively new.

Glad to hear you HAVE finally dealt with the revenue, though.;)

i dont think you get what is being said :

a BMW with the CD changer and Privacy Glass to buy new is 21k
a BMW without the CD changer and Privacy Glass to buy new is 20k

so as VRT is priced on the OMSP, then the car with the options fitted is worth more, hence the higher VRT.

figures above are approx and used for nice round figures.

well as you as you are summising that rgunnings car is new (which he never alluded to) he would maybe be charged for a cd changer but as he didnt and we dont know what age the car is we cant summise that he would be liable. Until he shows us the proof we cant say if he would be liable or not.

Wow, I bow to your superior knowledge. Desipte the fact I have dealt with the VRT on more than one occasion and am pretty sure I know the system inside out.

You probably have never been charged as only certain marques keep a database of extra attached to the chassis number and allow government agencies to access these databases. It also depends on what is standard on the marque.
    pipsqueak wrote: »

If you are implying that I treat the officers in the VRO with anything less than the respect any public servant carrying out his/her job efficently, then you are wrong. Nor would or should this have an effect on how much tax you pay. You can be the world's greatest douche, but you only ever pay the tax you deserve to pay and NO taxation officer would let someone away with paying tax because they are "sound"
    pipsqueak wrote: »

Why on earth would I name a public servant? It is their office that executes the taxation, not the individual. And what is the shame in a taxation officer charging rightful duty on an import?

The VRT calculation on the ros.ie site is the price you pay. It is valid for 15 days if you print out the price you were quoted on their site. So unless your car is not the one stated, you will not pay any more or less.

From the first page before you get to the calculator, first paragraph even...
This system provides the Open Market Selling Price (OMSP) for VRT purposes and the amount of VRT payable in respect of certain vehicles that are held on the Revenue Commissioners database. Please note that some Makes / Models / CO2 Emission of vehicles are not included. VRT is payable on any extras fitted to a vehicle.

not true, I printed off a quote and brought it in a week later and the woman told me she had to double check it as it changes all the time, it had gone up by €30 and I was told I had to pay what was on the screen and not the print out. €30 didn't bother me much but I've heard of cars doubling in value!
