There'll be more to come over the next few years IMO

Sad to see them go and a huge shock for a lot of families.

A lot of rumours circulating over what barracks will be next, but TBH with the exception of the Curragh and Dundalk, any barracks could go.

All very true, and with DFHQ moving to the DFTC it won't surprise me what happens to McKee and The Brugha.

One of the 2 big Dublin barracks will go I reckon, although I fear The Brugha is in more danger than McKee.

Coming from the 2nd Bn I'd be getting away lightly...

In the west I'd say mullingar is next. they are meeting themselves going on duty, plus they have had a few close shaves already with threats of closing. Custume bks is going to be jammed if 4FAR moves down

The sad reality is that the entire PDF could be located in one location if it came to it...

The sad bit is that the Curragh is a model... :o

Jaysus, don't think that would suit the Navy. :)

Whats so special about Dundalk? I think Athlone will stay, so will the Curragh. Two Brigades one for the west one for east. West to include Finner, Athlone, Limerick and Cork. East to include the otherside of country. West will then have Kilworth as a training location east will have the Glen.

2010 is next review and I think it will result in two brigades. Just my thoughts.

Is it possible they will just have four major barracks in the four provinces?

Heard some PDF talking about this possiblilty if the economic downturn continues to get worse.

There's no way it would work.

There just wouldn't be enough space for all the Units to fit.

Was anyone here around for the last Voluntary Early Retirement?.

I've applied for the Prison Service, if I got that the V.E.R. would suit me very well and 'Adios Army' :P

Would you still collect a pension from the Army, given you have done more than the 21 years?

Have to say Mairt, after seeing pictures of you, you would make a damn good Prison Officer, I know enough of them to know the Good ones. (Not cos I was in Jail though!!! My Da is one!!!)

You will probably cringe when you see how they march in Bellad House though!!!!!!!

    Whats so special about Dundalk?

    Nothing in the long run.

At the moment troops from Monaghan have been relocated there so unless the Govt are willing to pay 2 lots of disturbance allowance, then relocating them was a waste of time.

Dundalk is responible for the Northern part of Eastern Brigade, still plenty of VIs in that neck of the woods and its always wise to have troops stationed near the border.

I was shocked when Monaghan was closed, I would be completely caught off gaurd if they closed Dundalk, it just would not make any sense and if it was to happen then it would be the indicator that the countries economy is on its last breath.

    Prison Service?

Jeez Mairt, talk about the frying pan into the fire?

I've got mates in the PS and they can't wait to retire, think carefully about it.

    Cheers,

In light of recent events and with the news of a bomb being bundled across the border, anyone think the govt may have to reconsider some of the barracks closures in the current security context?

Lifford or Rockhill.Esp since Finner is an hour away from the border wheras Lifford was 2 minutes away from Derry.

I remember way back in those distant 90's, when there was talk of barrack closures, and Longford was montioned - well Longofrd was safe, as there was a then VERY influential ex-taoiseagh from that town, so the barracks was safe. Look what has happened now. Ha.

Limerick - look out. When your local influential TD is no longer so influential (or a TD;)), you had better prove your worth cause when the next cuts come, well, lets say you have been warned.:pac:
