As far as I know, anything over 750 kg GVW must be braked. With a small tow car that limit can even be lower, depending on manufacturers specifications for the towing car.

Of course here you can tow anything that has wheels and that you just nailed together yesterday, so your trailer may not have an official Gross Vehicle Weight :D

You cannot also legally exceed the train weight of the towing vehicle.

This will be on the vehicle weight and VIN plate.

Certain jeeps such as the Toyota Amazon have train weights of over 3500kg which if exceeded brings a whole load of problems into play such as a EC1 licence and a Tachograph!

I checked with the RSA on this and once you have an EB licence there is no maximun weight once you don't exceed your tow cars limit.

    Came across this today.

A 08 Transit, owned by a fleet rentals company, leased to a subby to a major ultilities company.

It is under the legal min for having a tacho, but because it often runs close (weight today was 3300) to its DGVW while also having a trailer a tacho has been fitted and calibrated.

    VIN plate for any doubters!
