    Hi guys,

Trying to fix a laptop which has no problem connecting to my network, i can ping any website but the actual browser will not work. any ideas whats up? i'm not too familiar with vista so if i can't get it to work i'll probably end stripping it out and putting XP on it if it's not something easy to fix :D

    cheers!

OK, can you do the ipconfig/all again, you used a space instead of the slash "/"

From what you've shown so far it looks ok. You're connected using wifi right?

You should try a ping to google

    ping www.google.com

Any kind of firewall software installed?
DNS server settings look a little off, are you able to use this connection with other pcs?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,493 ✭✭✭RedXIV

McAfee is on it but i don't think this is the issue. the network works on three other computers here

Looks ok to me, I'd reset the program preferences on your firewall so you are prompted for all applications trying to access the internet or else try to check if IE is permitted access. Alternatively download firefox here and see if that works. I'm sure it's your firewall, doesn't make sense for it to be anything else

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,660 ✭✭✭crawler

    Problem is DNS.

Turn off modem - turn off wireless router. Fully turn both off.

Power on modem - then power on router.

Make sure the only connection to the router is your WIFI connection - that should sort it.

Are you with UPC by any chance?

    You can also try

    ipconfig /release

    then

    ipconfig /renew

Hey, can you explain to me how you know it's DNS?

His ipconfig stuff looked ok to me. What did I miss?

the DNS address is the same as his router, i've seen some ipconfig showin the dns like that though

This is not a problem and normal for alot of routers. The router will act as a DNS server which will just relay request to the ISP DNS servers unless otherwise configured. Considering the fact that ping works to any website then the dns servers must be resolving the addresses ok.

To me the problem sounds like firewall as suggested.
To rule out firewall you should check mcafee's firewall settings. Look for something like programs or exceptions in the firewall settings and look for internet explorer or iexplore.exe.
You could also download firefox from another computer and copy it to your laptop and install that to rule it out.

    Hey guys,

Thanks for all the info guys! ended up completely pissed off with Vista. the laptop had only 1GB of RAM and was taking forever to do anything. took me over an hour to remove McAfee. couldn't even get firefox to launch. When i stripped Vista off and put XP on it, it worked no problem. So I can't nail what the problem was so i'm gonna generalise and say Vista :D

thanks for all your help though guys, much appreciated!

Glad ya got it sorted, I'm sure it wasn't vista and was just the firewall but we'll never know i suppose. Best of luck!
