Just wondering I'm thinking of renting a new house, is an hour a day each way too far to commute to work, it would mean travelling from Kerry to Limerick to work, roughly 50 miles each way, Do you think this is too much?

Depends entirely on the roads but I'd say it's a bit on the high side

In Dublin it takes some people longer than an hour to get to work.

Assuming it takes an hour each way, that's 2 hours a day x 5 = 10 hours a week out of your life.

yea it's way to far if you don't really need to live in Kerry, if the rent was €600 cheaper per month I would consider it but there would want to be a major incentive....

I guess you need to weigh up commuting costs with your potential savings and allow for things like car wear & tear etc too.

Exactly - If you work in Dublin and have less than a hour commute then you are doing very well  It use to take me longer to get to school!

I drink to Cork each day from Kerry. It's an hour each way 5 days/evenings/nights a week for many years. You just get very used to it because you get to know every inch of road. Although it's a b1tch in the ice/snow :(

    Certainly beats driving! :D

I'm used to a 4 hours daily commute, so two hours would feel like I was on holidays. That being said, if you can avoid it, do, as there are so many better things you could be doing with that time.

    Do the drive.

See what the roads are like. Do it in the dark and the bright. Calculate your miles. Add up how much petrol will cost, wear and tear on the car, servicing. Your car will become high mileage very quickly (what car have you?). It's alot to consider.

haha :D I'm abit dyslexic too!

Here's a simple spreadsheet to help you discover if its worth driving. You can include a utility figure in the non fuel expense per mile slot. Eg what value you put on driving for a mile/an extra few mins in bed.

BTW im guessing houseprices they could be way off (more than likely)

Well, it takes me 30 minutes to commute 8 miles.

It takes 45 minutes for a bus to get into town from Tallaght.

60 minutes for 50 miles doesn't seam so bad.

Are you taking into account traffic?

An hour, 50 miles a day, is nothing. And an hour on the (open) road is better for your car than an hour in a traffic jam.

It can take over an hour to cross Galway at commute time, now, so I don't think your commute is even worth a second thought, tbh.

My wife commutes 22 miles and it takes 40 mins, so you're getting away light imho

I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

I did the same drive everyday for about 8 months when I was working out in Raheen ( Abbeyfeale to Limerick ), it wasn't too bad at all really.Traffic was alot worse back then and it rarely took me over an hour to get home when it was bad.

I work only 5 miles from home now and I find myself spending about 20e on petrol just to get in and out, back then I was spending about 60- 70e so petrol aint that bad.Its mostly 5th gear driving from Kerry to Limerick, I think you should try it for a while and if you dont like get a place in Raheen, given away houses out there :D

I drive an hour to work and home again everyday. I would say that an hour is bearable, but anything over that just becomes tedious. You do get used to it and most times the journey passes quick enough just by listening to the radio.

The odd time though the drive just gets annoying and you wish you didnt have to travel do far. Especially when you get roadworks on your journey home that can add time to your journey. On one occasion last year I had to pass through three major sets of roadworks on my route, which added about a half an hour to the trip. Plus the weather can also cause you problems on some days.

So it's very do-able, and most times you will get just get into the routine of it, but just be prepared for delays some days.

When I worked in Fairview it would often take me an hour (in heavy traffic) to travel 4 miles - Merrion Gate to Fairview!

I live just outside Limerick and my office is in Dundalk. Thats 3hr 20 minutes up and 4 hours down.

Drive your pesky hour. If you enjoy driving then you will enjoy that.

BTW, can you afford all that petrol?

It would only take an hour to get to limerick and around an hour and a half back (traffic in adare can be a b*tch from 5 to 6:30.

10 euro can get me to limerick and back, not even driving soft.

Abbeyfeale to Raheen is such a boring drive. Why not get a place in Croom or Charleville.

excellent, going by your spreadsheet the rent would have to be at least half price and then you've got to decide if you want to spend another 48 hours a month driving to and from work.....'tis a tough one:confused:

Cars are there to be drivin, I dont see the big deal here tbh.

Go for it, my drive takes 85 minutes to and from work and I've got used to it. An hour would be a dream!

Woops not sure if you spotted it but theres a mistake in the spreadsheet. Enter twice your working days per month in cell B6. I forgot to account for the return trip. Hope you didn't already move out on my account!!! :pac:

I had a teacher who still drives from Ballyduff to Limerick every day. He used to do it in a 12 year old Sunny:eek::eek:

Would you consider someplace on the Dublin side like Moneygall or Borris-in Ossory?

Property prices in Limerick are seriously below the national average and the lowest of the 5 cities, so it's probably better to live in Limerick altogether though.

    you hardly do that everyday.

    back to op.

the hour each way sounds like an average commute in dublin.

what time to ou have to be in at because if it is early the extra time in bed is worth anything!!

Thanks lads, I'd say I'll wait till weather gets a bit better then try it for a month or so. I work shift work so it'd be varied starts. I don't mind driving really as I've a passat 1.9tdi so plenty enough power, Have a motorbike as well so I could vary it when the weather gets better. Thanks for your opinions much appreciated

The time isn't the significant issue,
the mileage, and cost of fuel is.
