Foot Injury

First off, I'm not looking for a medical diagnosis / prognosis.

While running the IMRA Howth race 13 days ago I 'twisted' my ankle on a decent. I finished the race but was limping a bit afterwards. I figured as it wasn't particularly painful it would eventually heal and I could go back running. However, in the interim period it has not really improved. The pain is generally on the top right hand side of my right foot, nearer the ankle than the toes. If I'm walking around the home or office it's fine but if I walk further (say a mile) it starts to aggrivate. Then I may step on a broken paving slab or bump into someone which requires a small step adjustment which can send a dart of pain through the whole area. Essentially I seem to eventually re-injure the area whenever I go walking outside.

So the frustration of this is getting to me and I'm wondering what to do next. Do I go to a physio (I don't know any atm), a podiatrist, a GP or a hospital for an X-ray. I don't particularly want to sit in A&E for 12 hours but nor to I want to throw money at a medical practioner who just tells me to 'go easy' and come back if it gets worse.

I'm wearing an ankle support atm (simple thing bought in a sports shop). I'm wondering if I should get a stronger, more robust support and where one would get such a thing ?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Defo wouldn't bother with hospital - A&E's are under serious strain - your doc can decide if you need an x-ray and you won't have to queue in an A&E if he refers you .

Hard to know whether a doctor or physio is the first port of call - If you think it's more serious probably the doc but do go to 1 of them. In the meantime stay off it - ice it, compress it and keep it elevated.

Get well soon - nothing more frustrating than being injured...

If you want to try a physio (which is what I would do in your circumstances)I'd recommend Aidan Woods. He's based on Pearce Street. He himself has run (and won) quite a few IMRA races, and is also a very good triathlete, which means he really understands athletes' mental approach to injuries (something which non-sporting physios don't always twig). He is also very very good!

Sounds just like what happened to me RC.
I went over on my ankle about 2 weeks ago. It didn't swell or bruise but was fairly sore. I didn't run for a few days but it didn't get any better. It's more my foot than my ankle now but occasionally my ankle will jar and I'll get a shooting pain. My foot hurts a bit when I'm run but after a few miles the general pain and suffering overshadows it. Might get some physio his week and see how it goes.

Mr Woods seems to be the way to go (he's also around the corner from me which is perfect).

    His site

    http://www.pearsestreetphysio.com/index.asp

states that there is a €10 discount if you register your club/business with the clinic. I suppose I could register BAC ?

So if you quote our club name you should get 10 yo yo's off any visit (40 bob instead of 50).
