New car

Ok lads, been out looking with the father today. He's decided he wants a new car. Basically he's got a 06 focus 1.6 petrol ghia with 35k km on it.

He went into a ford dealer who quoted him 9800 (some money off deal at the moment) for the exact same again, 11300 for the 1.8tdci or 13000 for the 2.0tdci auto.

Then the dealer threw a bit of a curve ball. Offered him a Mondeo 2.0 petrol zetec for 14k with his own. This car retails for 31700 so he's getting over 17k for his own. Sales guy said car was in stock and they want rid. Also has an alloy upgrade.

I know its a big petrol with the tax to go with it but as he only does about 10k km a year anyway so what would ye recommend? I know what i'm thinking on it but said ill get some good advice here

He's not getting 17k for his own. The car isn't worth 31k
    See here

And i wouldn't advise you go for the 2.0. Have a look on carzone at the prices of a 1.6petrol/2.0 Diesel.

What's wrong with current one? It's almost new?

He's swaying to it alright. The car wouldn't interest me in the least. I didnt know the price because its not the type of car i'd usually be looking at on carzone. Practically all of his driving is about town so was thinking the focus 2.0 tdci auto would be a good choice because he's been saying for ages that it'd be handy. The powershift is supposed to be a good box too despite the detuned engine

There's SFA wrong with his current car if you ask me! He needed a new altenator few weeks ago so has this idea in his head now that he wants something new. Frankly stupid but there is no talking to him so may as well help him as much as possible!

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

The change to the 1.8 diesel is not a bad one imo. He'll go up 3 years for €3.8k per year and the diesel will qualify for low road tax. He'll save substantially on fuel too. And the diesel will keep it's value well because of the above. Whereas his current petrol Focus will still have to do an awful lot of depreciation in the next few years

Here is a 2008 Mondeo with 100 miles so every bit as good as a new 2009 one. See the depreciation from 31700. You may be able to sell your Focus privately for 10K and save 4K?

he wont go for the hassle of private selling. Has anyone tried the powershift gear box in the focus yet? I'm trying to convince him of a diesel focus but was maybe a little disappointed that you cant get 1.6 at the moment and having driven the 1.8 i wasn't too hot on it. Bit rattly i thought

Those cost to change prices are not that bad at the moment to be honest.

I was talking to someone recently who was looking to change their 08 1.4 Focus for a new 1.8 TDCi Focus. There are two Ford dealers in the area. The place where he bought the 08 Focus simply told him that they could not take it, the other Ford dealer quoted a cost to change price of €7,000.

BTW I would not bother with the 2.0 petrol Mondeo, that car is pretty much sale proof in this country. That is why they are trying their best to shift it.
