The Butterfly Effect

Very good and underrated movie, it was on channel 4 tonight - just finished watching it. If you haven't seen it, it's worth a look.

    Now for the rant:

Saw this movie when it first came out, but now the the dark (and unintentionally hilarious) ending that I remember has been replaced by some horrendous fluffy pink feel good rot that was one of the alternative endings on the dvd.

Why oh why would they do this ? I'm not sure why, but I feel a little outraged by this.
Is it not enough that movies are censured to get into theatres, now they're being further softened for tv audiences ???

    Rant over.

Edit: Has anyone noticed any other instances of this sort of thing ?

    Smoke much crack tonight?

The mind boggles as to how this film ever got made in the first place. I think I want to like Ashton Kutcher (no idea why) but my god the man cannot act (or is excellent at concealing his talent). Poor delivery of reasonably interesting concept.

I have seen films aired on tv with alternate endings but I'm struggling to recall titles... Sorry.

Only film I can remember off the top of my head with an alternative ending screened on television is Army of Darkness which is ok because both endings to that are brilliant. I liked the Butterfly effect but I'm pretty much a sucker for anything to do with timetravel/alternate dimensions.

As for the censorship? Just be glad you don't live in America where there likes of Scarface and Die Hard are edited so much they become laughable.

Watched it for the first time just there, good flick. Watched the alternate (sad) ending on youtube, much better!

In fairness Ted, the proper ending is very dark. I could only imagine the kind of outraged calls a TV station would receive from various auld ones on the subject.

Saw it in the cinema when it was released and really enjoyed it. Decent viewing.

The alternative ending is abit crap though.

I think the ending where they both turn but not at the same time is the best ending from a personal point of view, I really liked that movie and loved the song by Oasis they chose too, the other ending is excellent but not what TV viewers want to see.

Much prefer the darker ending, just watched the alt ending on c4+1 there. It's a cop out to the original in my opinion.

I actually had some respect for the movie with the original ending.

    It's all gone now.

    Theres a new ending?

    How differeent?

I saw it in the cinema with the darker ending and I really enjoyed it. For a film that really shouldn't have worked (Ashton Kutcher and Parallel universes) it was great.

Another film with an alternate ending was 1408. They replaced the original dark one with a pink fluffy one too.

He basically goes back in time, changes everything, wakes up in a future where everything is grand but he doesnt know yer one anymore. He passes her on the street when theyre all grown up, Oasis play in the background, they have a subliminal moment. The End.

Thats horrific as in a terrible change to a magnificent ending. The movie was great imo, but the ending really made it. Jeebus that really annoys.

    First off...a remarkably average movie..

But I think you might all be slightly confused, saw this in the cinema and on dvd...

The dvd release was the Directors cut with a shocking new alternative ending and stated so on the packaging..It also states that its the directors cut during the opening titles

The cinema version ended with them passing each other on the street,as was shown last night on Channel 4,this is the version that was released on vhs at the time too..

So no need to worry ;)

Must say I'm surprised that people liked the movie.

That was the ending I saw in the cinema. Must check out the darker version.

I really liked it at the time, havent seen it since.
One thing that really pissed me off was the way he got the "stigmata" hands to impress the religious prisoner. It was such a cheap quirk & went completely against the whole concept of the film

I personally think it's an excellent movie.

    This explains alot.

When I seen it in the cinema, I enjoyed the film until the end, it was the happy one, so I felt a little cheated waiting for that.

But when I watched this about 2 months ago with college folk, I was wondering to myself why I hated the ending so much and couldn't remember it being that decent, cause it was the darker, better ending I saw then.

Since I seen it recently, I didn't bother with last night, but I'm sure I woulda been utterly confused if they showed the happy ending :-S

I Am Legend also had alternative endings.
Vampires had souls and he was able to talk to them logically, I think

Ya I got it on DVD, I think the american version had the darker(much better) ending while the European release had the happy bunnies and sunshine* endng.

For the life of me I don't know why.

*Happy Bunnies and Sunshine may not have appeared on the European Version

I liked the ending where Kutcher talked to the audience and told us we were punk'd for watching his film

I liked the movie, didnt realise there was an alternate ending.

I agree with Tristram, despite his planky acting, I find myself wanting to like Kutcher. He seems like a like-able person in RL!
