    Hey All,

I want to start to change my life, I am 22, 6'5 , male and 20st.

I want to start going to the gym and feel nervous about it , as I dont want to be sneered at .

I really wanna to get fit , healthy and lost weight.

Can anyone advise me on the best way to start off as I am completely at a loss as to where to begin.

Fair play to you. Much as youth is wasted on the young, gym's are wasted on the fit. Many, many people feel like you, intimidated by the gym, afraid to go. Don't worry about it. Nobody will be minding you.

Get a programme, a few sessions with a trainer can be really beneficial if you have a few quid to spare. If not, a bit of research and dedication will get you there. How's the diet?

    Hey man, that sounds great.

Im glad that you wanna do this. Exercise is a great way to go. :D
Gyms are all about self- modification so you'll be no different than the rest who go there. I would not be so worried about being 'sneered at'.

If it is what you really want to do, you will overcome any obsticles in your way :)

To start off , go have a look at a few gyms if there are more than one. Talk to the personal trainers and they'd be quite happy to help you i'm sure.

From there they'll develop a plan with you that suits you best. Good luck with it !

Fair play dude, you'll be grand. As stated everyone is there for the same reason and that's self improvement. If someone is sad enough to sneer at you (I've never noticed it in a gym) that's their problem not yours. Once you get into it you wont even notice what other people around you are doing and if you do your not focusing!! +1 on a couple of sessions with a trainer to get you started off!

    Cheers Guys,

So I spoke with a friend of a friend this weekend about fitness as he is an instructor.

I feel I want to get in to weight training , losing weight but at the same time getting built.

I have absolutely no idea about weight training or training of any kind, so maybe you kind ppl can advise.

My sample diet is very very very different day to day , I generally have a the following:

( I know this is terribly wrong and this is why I am doing it)

    Breakfast:

Toast 1 slice or Cornflakes ( Two sugars)
    Tea ( Two Sugars)

    Lunch

Sandwich ( 3 slices of bread , invariably cheese) No butter , dont eat butter spreads hate it since a child.
Fizzy Drink - Can of Sprite or Nestea
    Pack of Crisps
    Sometimes soup.

    Dinner

Whatever is going at home basically - Invariably will include potatoes or chips

I eat more snacks in the evening, will have maybe pack crisps and one or two glasses of sprite.

    So thats what I eat.

I have plenty of time in the world at the moment to get fit as I have no job for past 3 weeks, so I am hoping to go to the Gym early in the morning and in the evening.

Any help or recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Once again, fair play to you.

As has been said above, you shouldn't feel the slightest bit intimidated by the gym. Trust me, nobody will pay any attention to you - everybody in there had to start womewhere, so they'll give you nothing but encouragement.

I started out at a somewhat similar position last year, and have managed to drop over 4 stone since, with a little bit still to go. I found a cominbation of weights and cardio worked well for me.

I'll leave the specific advice to others both more experienced and more qualified, but i will say the first place to start is your diet. Check out the stickies for info, but you'll need to cut out the fizzy stuff, crisps etc. Also, beware of portion size - smaller meals more often is the way to go. Changing portion size was perhaps the single biggest difference i made to my diet.

Also, check into this forum every now and then, its a fountain of information - you'll pick up a lot of info and tips from just lurking!

See if you can talk to that instructor again, he could give you more in depth advice regarding dieting as he is qualified. He can take a look at your stats and develop a specific program for you :)
