Hi all, i've recently changed jobs and soon i'll have to travel about 140mile roundtrip a day.(dundalk to curragh). any suggestions for a good diesel type around the €10k -€15k.


I currently drive a 07 passat highline but its a petrol and it'd cost me an arm and a leg in fuel so my wife is taking that and i'm taking her 05 vw golf 1.4 petrol about 35000miles on the clock.

Chances are that i'm gonna be trying to trade it in,(tried selling it for 3 months and only got 1 call),
I'm swaying towards a jeep/4x4 type eg sportage,pajero,santa fe etc
Bearing in mind at the weekends i'm gonna need room in the back for a new baby, and a dog in the back again, and of course the missus up front.
Whats fuel economy like on these? tax? any better alternatives?

Would an estate even be better??
so confused, i just need some advice to steer me in the right direction.there are so many different vehicles to choose from

Fuel economy on a jeep is terribile and unless your passat is a 2.0l petrol, it wont be much worse on fuel than that dead 1.4 Golf.

Peugeot 1.6 HDi is what they are all raving about at the moment, I would sell the Golf and go over to the UK and get a 04/05 307/407 for about 5-6k inlcuding vrt.

As said above nearly every big litre 4x4,be it petrol or diesel, will be quitre heavy on fuel.

I think an esate would be ideal:

Not having a go at you, but I don't understand this obsession with mpg and fuel costs. Add up depreciation, tax, insurance and maintenance on any car, and then compare it to the difference between 45 mpg and 30. Here, you're talking about 700 miles per week. At 45 mpg, 15.5 gallons or 72 litres of fuel, roughly €72. At 30 mpg, roughly €110, a difference of €40 a week, or €2000 a year.

The €10K you're talking about spending would cover the difference for 5 years!
