    Moved from C&H.

(Not sure if here's the right place, but I couldn't think of anywhere else.)

Does he have smelly feet anyway?
The runners probably aren't allowing his feet to breathe while he wears them.

    http://footcare.ygoy.com/how-to-get-rid-of-smelly-feet/

That link has lots of ways to prevent stinky feet and stinky shoes.

Scholl also do deodorant for feet, that could work.

It's more to do with his feet.

Wash and dry the runners (not in washing machine, it's bad for them).
Get him to scrub his feet with a pumice stone (chemist), properly, it should take a couple of minutes per foot).
    Get pure cotton socks.

    This works for me.

Does he wear socks when he is wearing them?

Sweat from your bare foot usually causes your runners to get smelly pretty quickly.

Scholl do foot products and some kind of powder that absorbs these smells. Apparently!?

Most supermarkets or chemists should have it.

Bicarbonate of Soda is my go-to for all sorts of oder problem. It is great for absorbing odors. You could fill the shoes with it and let it set in them overnight, then just pour the powder out out.

I also agree with the socks suggestion. Make sure he is wearing 100% cotton socks.

You can buy Sports Gel from Clarks, it cleans and deodrises the inside and outside, has a brush on it.

put them in a washing machine and make sure they are in a pillow case. sometimes the glue on the runners aren't the best, and when washed the glue becomes soft, leaving an almost cats piss smell to them. if in the pillow case this smell doesn't happen

+1 on the bicarbonate of soda, I find talcum powder is also great for getting rid of smells in shoes.

It's his feet that are making smelly though this soon, I would echo the cotton socks recommendations. Also make sure he doesn't have some sort of fungal infection on his feet, this can make them smell.
