Anyone use these anymore? Thinking of getting a few for a trip to the states, but is it true they only come up to $100? Or can i get higher amounts?

TBH fewer and fewer places accept them these days. I wouldn't bother with them.

Waste of time, load up your visa before you go and use it.

I thought traveler's cheques went out with the 90's!! Just use your atm card, there is a small charge for each transaction so keep them few and big. No need to have to worry about places accepting travellers cheques etc.

I always bring $200 of them on any trip and if its the States you are going to then you should have no problems exchanging Amex Travelers Cheques in any major bank. Less shops and restaurants accept them these days but the big banks and many Forex offices will gladly take them.

I only bring them with me in case my cash and my cards get nicked. That way I have ready access to $200 emergency funds with the cheques before a local bank will issue me an emergency credit card ( usually takes a couple of days and a lot of phone calls for which you'll need cash to pay for ). I just email myself the serial numbers and that way if the cheques get nicked I can have them cancelled and reissued or cashed pretty much straight away.

Thankfully I've had the same $200 cheque on every trip Ive been on since 2002 when I last got mugged abroad. Nice safety cushion to have in case it ever happens.
