    To: Irish Government

We the undersigned, are calling on Minster FOr justice Dermot Ahern, and the licensing dept., to grant special exemption licences for Sunday March 15th.

    Its our national festival weekend.

Most People will be off on Monday 16th.

Under the current legislation, ALL bars and clubs will have to close at 1am.

What message are we sending to the thousands of overseas visitors that will visit Ireland that week.

What message are the government trying to send out to responsible adults that live here that want to go out on sundays nights.

In a time of recession its seems incredibly irresponsible of the government to ignore a proven revenue stream, and to put thousands of hospitality staffs' jobs at risk.

OPEN ALL CLUBS UNTIL 2.30AM ON SUNDAY MARCH 15TH

Of all the paddys weekend parties around the world, the Irish ones will finish first.

I'm all for that but what makes them think that anyone lucky enough to actually still have a job will be off on Monday 16th for?

Paddy's Day falls on the 17th which is a national holiday, unless you take the 16th as a holiday day it's just a normal day, think they need to change that!

Unfortunately this is likely to fall on deaf ears, this Government haven't got a clue what they are doing, and are living in the dark ages.

By the way, the above petition is seperate to the Give Us The Night campaign, it is supported though:
    Hello there,

This is an update from us regarding nightclub opening hours and the possibilities of achieving fair closing times here in Ireland. As we understand it, the Sale of Alcohol Bill is now scheduled for April, which gives you a chance to contact the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform in advance of that time. If you would like to make your own personal submission in relation to the upcoming bill, all the relevant pointers can be read in the "GUTN callout to nightclub staff" story on our home page. Alternatively you can download and read it as a one sheeter at:

    http://www.giveusthenight.org/file/GUTN%20one%20sheeter.doc

Feel free to print this page out and pass onto people you think might be interested. There really has never been a better time to make your feelings known on this, so make sure you do!

As you know St Patrick's Day is on the way, and with it falling on a Tuesday this year, it is expected to be an extra long weekend, particularly for tourists travelling to Ireland. A close ally of the Give Us The Night campaign, Buzz O'Neill, has set up a petition asking that Sunday night March 15th be granted a 2.30am closing time as opposed to the current 1am time in place for Sundays:

    http://www.PetitionOnline.com/mar15/

Give Us The Night of course call for all Sunday night clubs to operate until the same time as every other night of the week, and we fully support this petition to see that a special exception be made this coming March 15th. As more clubs count their losses and lay off more staff, we feel it is even more important on this weekend that they should be able to maximise their profits and take advantage of the extra tourist and public demand that will exist that weekend.

On another note, some of you may have noticed or read last month's Irish Times piece by Kitty Holland – one of the first articles since we have been formed as a group, which gave an accurate and in depth report of nightlife in Ireland. For us this marked one of the our greatest breakthroughs yet, as for the first time on record to our knowledge, a Garda officer (Superindendent Joe Gannon of Dublin's Pearse St. station) went on record to support the idea of staggered closing. You can read the full article here:

Finally, and it may be of some interest to you also: Dublin City Council recently outlawed the distributing of flyers on the streets of Dublin. They do of course give the option of paying 250 euro for a special licence for the 'privilege' of being able to hand out flyers for a particular event, however we would advise anyone reading not to part with your money – they should not receive a cent for this outrageous levy. There are ways around the flyer situation: one way is to get a stamp with your website address or event details to stamp on patrons' wrists or hands; if that seems too difficult
you could hand out wristbands or non paper objects that carry your event's details either. Again, these are only suggestions – we expect that many of you will be able to think of alternative ways to get the message of your event out there. We have spoken with the INIA who have told us that the decision of Dublin City Council was voted on last year, and that there is virtually no chance that they will reverse the decision. We will be contacting Dublin City Council anyway though, to protest against their decision.

    That's it for now,

    Thanks,

    Give Us The Night Team
