Chasing up a job application

    Hi all,

Like many others i'm not searching for a job!! Problem i'm finding is that no one seems to be replying to my applications, and i'm sure i'm not the only one.

I know there is probably hundreds applying for the same job and the companys/recruiters are snowed under with applications but it would be nice to get a "no you haven't been shortlisted" or "yes we still have you in mind for that".

My query is how long would you leave it before sending another email or putting a call in to see how your application is?
Or is it even a good idea to follow it up?

    Thanks

If its advertised by the company then I personally would ring about a week after I sent it, maybe less maybe more depending on the closing date for applications.

If its by a recruitment agency, there seems to be an attitude of dont call us, we'll call you. One recruiter told me they when to lunch and when they came back there was 50 more cvs in their inbox !! Always worth ringing, leaving your name might make them look at your cv twice. But in general its normal not to hear from them for a while.

The last time I could guarantee on getting a reply to an application back was in the middle of the dotcom silliness at the turn of the century, when anyone who knew what HTML was could get a job within days. Since then, I haven't been massively surprised not to get a call back. Unfortunately, there are a lot of lazy HR staff out there who do the bare minimum.

DubLegs - maybe send a PM to AAAARGH! who is active on this forum. He might review your cover letter and CV for you (hope he doesn't mind me saying this).

I've actually recieved emails back acknowledging my application and all mainly are from direct companys i have applied to. Recruiters don't acknowledge.

I've also seen notes added to jobs advertised by recruitment places that you'll only receive a response unless you are sucessful. Bit unfair i think everyone should be allowed the courteousy of knowing either way!

I might send a polite email to the companys and ask how my cv is doing etc.

Eoin - I wouldn't like to put AAAARgh out or end up with him being inundated by other ppl doing the same thing. Thanks for the advice though!!

With a recruitment agency,i would always wait for them to call. Job could be on slow go or not exist.I have found out the hard way, less is more with them. For a company I would contact them after about 1 week to 10 days..

Actually as a recruiter I can assure you that in my company we do acknowledge every application even if it's only an automated response :) I can tell you that I have received around 40 applications today (and it's a slow day) and physically I wouldn't be able to send a personalised response to every e-mail. But I would not miss a relevant application either - it's my job and my bread as well! You may want to give the recruiter a call but if you're a good match for the role they'd be on to you earlier.

    Good luck with your search!

Unfortunately herya you are the exception to the rule. Most recruiting agencies are damn rude in not even acknowledging your cv and companies are getting as bad. Sad sign of the times.

I wish all recruiters were like yourselve Herya but unfortunately the ones i've come across aren't like that.
I wouldn't mind an automated response but sadly not all are even giving them.

Thanks for all the advice - think i'll chase them up from Monday.
