OK lads, i may be barking up the wrong tree here but it occured to me last nite that the venue for the 2010 ryder cup, celtic manor, has 3 courses - and one of them has been designed by monty. I just wonder has this anything to do with monty being appointed ryder cup captain. The Celtic Manor courses are only recently enough designed with the 2010 course being built specifically for the ryder cup. I just wonder did terry matthews (celtic manor owner) say to monty something along the lines of, build a course for me and ill put a good word in for you for captain when the ryder cup comes here. Im sure terry matthews would have a little sway over things seeing as it will cost him an absolute fortune to stage the event.

PS - i was drunk last nite when i came up this so it could have been the drink talking.

Dont think Terry M would have had much of an influence TBH. Monty was nailed on to be captain in 2014 in Scotland so if Monty was looking for him to put in a good word for him it would have been for 2014 and not 2010.

From what I'm hearing and from reading newspaper reports it seems that Ginners was the driving force behind monty getting the job and I wouldnt be surprised if he himself was captain in 2014. (Maybe he wanted 2014 for himself so he put forward monty this year!:D)

I think Monty will turn out to be a perfect captain as he seems to be a different person at the Ryder cup as opposed to the regular tour! Ollie will be more suited to 2012 in the US as he would have a better understanding of the american game while also having the indepth knowledge of the european tour. Faldo lacked that knowledge of the European tour which in the end cost him the match. Ollie would be similar to Langer in terms of balance between the two tours.

I'm glad you put in the caveat about it being the drink talking ;)
Seeing as how it was widely felt that Faldo was too long removed from the tour, it really became a 2 horse race between Ollie and Monty.
There seems to be a lot of sense in having Ollie as the 'away' captain because Monty was never too happy on American soil.
Plus, I'd say Ollie still might think himself capable of making the next team if he can get/stay fit.
