External Hard Drive Problem

I have a Western Digital My Book 500G External HD and after plugging it into the laptop the other day via USB it shows up as 'local disk G' and cant be accessed. Windows then asks me to format in order to use.

I restarted and before the log in screen came up, the screen said 'checking drive G for inconsistencies' which took like a day and deleted a few bad files seemingly but left me in the same position.

I assumed everything was gone from the HD but ive just plugged it into the Xbox and can play and view everything perfectly.

Has anyone ANY idea what might be happening!?!

    Thanks a mil

To start off with, what operating system have you got? Vista?
Is the external or your internal drive formatted with different formats? 32 bit V's NTFS Vista type formats, etc
Have you tried checking to see if even a different USB lead can make a difference?

Im using Vista and the file system on the external hard drive is FAT32..think the 2 drives on the laptop are NTFS so maybe thats the issue. I plugged in the hd into another laptop but same problem. If i format it as Windows is requesting will i lose all the data?
