I'm in Waterford so a 60cm disk might suffice, whats the cheapest dish that'll do the job and survive a winter storm? The dish would be bolted to a gable end facing east (so quite protected).

What satellite is it for? 60cm would be ok for 28east but thats about all. Solid is usually better than a mesh one. Doesnt have to be high as long as a clear line of sight to satellite

    It'll be for a non-contract Sky box.

Then 60cm with a decent lnb is fine

I was looking for a solid 60cm last week for a gable-end and found it in satworld.ie (in Kimmage) for €25 on special offer. Got a 2m pole and spider brackets for €40 there too. Bought a smart titanium quad LNB on ebay for around €29 inc delivery.

Dish worked fine, not quite a nice as my triax td64 but it looks just a robust and mounting brackets look strong.

That will work well and you can also upgrade to a quad lnb later if you want to add more boxes

Tony, from your experience how do these $ky dishes/standard mounts stand up to weather? My brother-in-law looses signal in windy weather- he has a standard $ky installation.

Well they are made to a price level but work pretty well if correctly installed and should not be affected by wind. Where on the house is your brothers dish installed?

On the chimney. I thought the mounts looked a but flimsy.

Not surprising then, chimney is the worst place to mount a dish

It astounds me why even small dishes are mounted/installed on chimneys! I find that the solid 60cm dishes with a decent lnb work/perform better than the mesh sky oval dishes in bad weather, but everyone to their own.

more than likely because the installer wants a call back when it moves in the wind,,,,after all if it was 8ft off the ground the householder or his/her mate might be able to re align it,,,,,,really bugs me when i get a callout and i find the dish is in such a funny place that it is only accessable on a dry sunny july afternon
