AFAIK when you fly in to Sharm you only get a tourist visa for the Sinai peninsula and Cairo is on the mainland. If you wanna go there you'd have to apply for an Egyptian visa in advance from the embassy before flying and then you can go to Cairo. I
I could be wrong on that cause things change but thats how it was when I was there in July- one lad I was travelling with had to go all the way back to the Egyptian embassy in Israel to get a visa to go back to Sinai and then carry on to Egypt proper.

Ambitious ? Maybe. Expect a long (+13 hours) bus ride. Unless you fly but thats more expense than what it is probably worth. Nonetheless it can be done.

Make sure you try to dive the Thistlegorm whilst there- they run boat trip to it. Excellent dive. Diving from Dahab isn't the best Egypt has to offer but its ok for some fun dives.

All in all if I were you and only had 2 days to spare of a one week holiday I'd take a trip to Petra in Jordan instead. Its superb and its closer than Cairo.

Have a read of our thread on our trip to Sharm, Cairo, Luxor and Petra, all done in a week. And definitely fly, it's not worth the bus journey.
