Computer RAM on Ebay

    Hi all,

I bought RAM for my computer last week.

When it arrived I realised that it wasn't compatible with my computer.

I checked the listing on ebay and in fairness they listed what the ram wouldn't be compatible with. Basically, it was totally my fault for not checking the compatibility and I admit that.

So I e-mailed the seller asking could I send it back and get ram that would work with my computer. And the response I got was:

"Hi thanks for your email. Yes there are two reasons that this wont work, firstly you need ECC, this is non-ecc memory and secondly in the red text on the listin we ask that you check your chipset before purchasing and it seems you have an intel chipset which also isn’t mentioned"

Do I have a leg to stand on? I don't want to throw £60 worth of RAM in the bin and have to go and spend another 60 on ram that will work!!

I suppose that their problem would be that they would have to go to the trouble of testing it to make certain that it hadn't been damaged. If it had also been taken out of a sealed wrapper, they couldn't sell it to anyone else.

Had it been me, I would remember to read the item details in future and put the dud purchase down to experience. :(

Well they say they stated in red on the listing that buyers are responsible for what they buy.

email the seller asking them 'yes or no' will they replace it. :)

    Thanks for the replies lads.

It wasn't in wrappers. I have the bags, etc they came in.

I bought three modules of the stuff and only used one module to test.

    On their website they state:

    Returns & Right of Cancellation

Any items purchased in error or received as faulty can be returned within 7 working days of receipt of an RMA form for a full refund minus postage with the condition that items are in the condition that they were received. Requests for an RMA form must be made to returns@funkygiraffe.co.uk in writing giving your order number and full name within 7 working days of receipt. If you exercise your right of cancellation after the goods have been received then these goods must be returned to Funky Giraffe at your own cost.

I wonder will that cover me :(

An option would be to sell it on. Try an ad on Adverts.ie or eBay. You won't get full price but you'll be less out of pocket and it'll be a cheaper lesson learned. Even if they do refund you the RAM they'll charge you for postage to your address and you'll have to pay to ship it back.

There's only one way of finding out, but it does seem from their email response that they're trying to wriggle out of their own terms.

Did you email that address, and ask about an RMA? Also, has it been less than 7 days since you received it?

    Hey,

I sent a mail to that address but it says all eBay related sales queries must be sent to eBay@.....

I got the ram on monday so I'm well within 7 days.

Would I be out of line if I opened a case in the resolution centre? Admit that I made a mistake but want to get the issue resolved?

Well, they do state a returns policy for items bought by mistake, so they should stick to that. A dispute might get things moving. Just state the same in the dispute, and ask for the RMA that you already requested.

In fairness I don't see them trying to 'wriggle' out of anything. He asked a question which they replied to, they did not expressly say he couldn't return it - just follow the procedure they've outlined to you, nothing so far seems to suggest that they won't accept it back - provided you email their ebay address and you pay postage back which is completely fair as it was a user fault. Don't see anything unreasonable on this thread so far. Only open a dispute if the seller refuses to co-operate or takes an unreasonably long time to respond...

They would probably exchange it, however you would have to pay postage again probably. e.gif
