Whats the biggest mileage you've seen?

The Clio I did my driving test in had 326k miles on the clock and was still tipping away nicely. I was thinking of changing my own motor and then thought, why would I bother if I could squeeze another 200k miles out of it.

So whats the biggest mileage you've seen on a perfectly running automobile and more to the point why do we all think 100k miles is a lot on a car if its lifespan is anywhere between 200 - 300k miles?.

I'd have no issue buying a car off myself with any amount of mileage. The problem is you cant be sure exactly how well a car was treated by someone else, the bigger the mileage the more a bad owner has misreated it.

My cars havnt had particularly high mileage bar the partner van I had for a bit. Got it with close to 180k and sold it with around 190k.

Because the average 100k mile car is worth very little, so it can often make more finanical sense to change to a newer car than to spend ever-increasing sums on maintaining the car. Sad but true, i'm afraid.

250+ on my dads old renault

got 187k on my A4 and 130ish on my A6

434k miles on a 1980 golf diesel one owner. Running very well.
880k kilometres on a 1992 carina e diesel running like a bag of nails.

All the highest milers I've been in are Chinese taxis. Not a single one had less than half a million kilometres on the clock, and I don't recall any of them having working shock absorbers either :pac:

My current car 1999 Opel Astra has 130k miles.

Needs new rear brake drums, new suspension, new exhaust and might need a head gasket.

Surely cars with big mileage such as 200+ miles needs to have parts replaced?????

assuming you mean 200k+ miles there!

If the parts have been replaced, thats grand. Also cars get parts replaced all the time surely? I had large amounts of suspension components replaced on my old car at 45k miles and on my dads car at 80k km - both used on very similar poor roads (back home on the island) frequently wouldn't have helped.

Both said former car of mine and the car of my fathers have entirely new rear ends due to inattentive van/4x4 drivers too; thats parts replaced ;)

I've seen lots of cars with 200-300k miles on them. My own Laguna has 190k miles which is not too high for a reliable make like Renault. Just passed NCT and most parts are original - battery, clutch, cat, exhaust, 3 shocks, balljoints, track rod ends, CV joints, wheel bearings, brake discs etc.

Had to replace the brake pads, one shock, the twist beam bushings and the inner track rods, one electric window regulator, a couple of tyre pressure sensors. And obviously the timing belt has been done several times.

On holiday in tenerife i came across an old E class diesel mercedes (taxi) and it had somewhere in the region of 760k km's. But the one that beats the lot was when I was a mini cab in London a 2weeks ago (VW Sharan) think it was a 01 or 02, thought I was seeing things when I looked at the clock 1,100000 apparantly some of the minicabs dont leave the road 3x 8 hour shift, 7 days a week 365 days a year. Im sure that it has to be a record!

    Anyway back OT,

My old man's 03 Avensis (which was mine from new up to almost 2 years ago) has just over 170k miles on the clock. It has started using a bit more oil and had suspension work done on it recently but its due it's NCT at the end of March and don't expect any major problems (fingers crossed) from it.

My dads work car (00 Laguna) is currently the highest miler in the family, a paltry 115k. It's been carrying a few hundred kg in tools for the last 2 years so it's probably wearing like it has 300k.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,782 ✭✭✭P.C.

My old man bought a 300D Merc in '81.

He loaned it to me when I went to University, but I had to promise I gave it back before it got to 500K km.

Unfortunately, it died soon after it got to 501K km, in '00.

    500K km in 20 years - not bad. :)

Engines/transmission/drivetrain really only wear in the first few moments when they are still cold, or getting up to speed. A car that has cruised on the motorway for 100k is going to be in much better condition that one with half the mileage, used for school runs, never getting much up to temperature.

Cars themselves are really only meant to last about 10-20 years, with planned obsolesence and the availability of parts. There'll always be a few stragglers mind, but most go after 5-10, or end up rallied around a field.

It's bloody stupid to junk a perfectly functional car because it's five years old though, and puts out a bit too much warming gasses, which I've seen being suggested by some eco-owners. "I junked my year-old merc and bough a Prius, I'm sooooooo Eco-friendly." Real environmentalists keep their cars going as long as safely feasible. 4k Euro for a suspension/engine overhaul, is still at least a tenth of the cost of a new car. I know my Grandfather kept his cars until they were well and truly end of life. He had an early 1970's Corolla into the mid nineties I think, still running daily. The thing even had a choke on it.

Properly looked after, a car can last a lot longer than you would think. And running through cars like white-goods every five years is even more environmentally unfriendly than just hanging onto your big smoker until it lets go for the last time.

I also read once of a Honda VFR that managed to acquire 800,000 miles, though it had been through 2 engines to do it.

Volvo's seem to consistently go on forever.

A mate of mine runs a Volvo tank (late 70's, unsure of model no.) that has well over 200k on the clock. It's huge, handles like a boat, but he gets 30+mpg out of it, can store 3 surfboards in it and sleep in it at the same time (with the gf!!).

Me da maintained another Volvo estate that clocked over 250k for a guy, when the oroginal owner traded it up the car was offered to a farmer friend of ours for nothing as something to lug haybails in as an alternative to a pickup. He stuck front brake pads on, MOT'd it and it's done another 60k in the last 4 years. Still goes like a train too and smooth as silk.

Lol i've seen a few high milers. Funniest i saw was a 99 Polo with a 186k on it. I had to laugh when i looked in the window.

    Hilux Surf with 340,000 km/miles can't remember.#
    02 E220 cdi with 400,000km's

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 935 ✭✭✭samsemtex

Our old Land Cruiser VX had 250kmiles on it when we sold it, but were pretty sure it had been clocked and in reality was closer to 400k. It needed a new Automatic transmission and we found out after we sold it that it had a cracked chassis. Either way the guy fixed it up(at considerable expense i would imagine) and it was still on the road last year. Must have close to 500k miles on it now.

Seems to be a few of the older Renaults in here with big numbers. 90's Renaults were really strong cars, best kept secret ever. PS do lorries count cause if they do then I've seen just over 1.5 million Km on a few. Most on a car that I remember was my mates dads MK I Jetta. 475,000 miles. Ex taxi and it blew itself apart one day when it refused to shut down and just reved itself to death running on its sump oil. A very sad ending :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,279 ✭✭✭snowman707

highest for me was bluebird dsl with 340k miles, was running perfect until it had an argument with a scania lorry.

back int the 80's my friend had a renault ts20 with well over 400k miles .

I've forgotten the figure but it was over 500,000 and I was driving it.

353k on a 3.5 yr old Seat Inca Van. Used to be owned by a security crowd I worked for when I was in college. Thing was ragged by everyone and anyone, on the road 24 hours, barely serviced and still the engine was as sweet as a nut. I think its death nail came in the form of a lamp post after some idiot left the keys in it and some undesireables took it for a spin:rolleyes:

    Saw a few mondeo's with 250 -260k miles, my father has a 01 golf with 202k miles.

We recently took back 3 Superbs with 180k, 220k and 297k (KM's) on. All 3 were bought by the drivers (thank god - imagine trying to sell those!). I drove the 220k one up to the local shops as my car was blocked in. Not an issue with it at all apart from the gearstick being a bit "flappy".

We manage some Mercedes Sprinters and Varios for a company. Think one of the Varios is up to almost 500,000 miles and running strong. One of the Sprinters at 450,000 miles is having a good few issues though - I blame poor Merc build quality :D

Just under a million km. Taxi in the Canaries about a year ago. Mid 90s Mercedes E250d

Just out of interest more than anything else, how cheap do these cars sell for with that kind of mileage? Would be interesting to know...

A farmer friend had a mk2 jetta with 250K miles on it. one owner from new and I can guarantee it never went over 40mph in its whole life. The steering wheel was worn down to the metal in the one place he normally kept his hand!

200K miles on my 97 almera, still driving perfectly.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

A while ago I was collecting my son from a party in the westwood leisure complex, saw a mint looking MK1 GTI on 83 WW plates. Had a quick look at it, interior was in excellent condition, paint work almost perfect, saw that there was over 382,000 miles on the clock.

    968 #1 has 116k miles (196k kms) and 968 #2 146k miles (243k kms).

    Both run perfect.

Rear spoiler squeaks like mad on one of them, though. Must write Porsche about that....shocking quality......n....:p

Have been in many french taxis with 500k + kilomteres, highest I ever saw was a Citroen Xsara diesel with around 650k on the clock. Had to say that it felt like it too; the engine might have been solid but the shocks meant that it was actually painful to go over bumps!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 664 ✭✭✭Flyer1

I've seen a 1996 Almera with a whole 343k on the clock, 1.4l petrol engine, and it was driving perfectly.

Was in Portugal in '06. Jumped into a '00 Merc C-class diesel taxi. Thing had 917000 km on it couldnt believe it.
Thats an average of 95000miles a year, some going.
I'm quite proud of my car, '03 Alfa 156 with 120k and no issues!

Can't remember exact mileage, but I've seen - a few years back in Berlin - a Mercedes Taxi 123 Diesel with 850k+ kilometres on it. Remember 'cos I was stunned and had a chat with the driver about it.

    Can't destroy these things.
