How many counties

    Hi

    First post here.

This is an idea to add some variety to your spins, don't know is anyone thought of it before. Try to cycle to as many different counties as you can. Rules are you have to cycle to a county (just inside county boundary will do) and back home in the same day. 12 hour maximum day and obviously you can add more than one county in a day. Biggest drawback on the longer distances is that you probably can't do a circuit, just there and straight back.

I'm in Dundalk and not counting Louth so far I have 12 which is 8 of the 9 in Ulster (no Donegal) plus Meath Dublin Westmeath and Longford. Furthest was Derry and Longford both about 9 hours 115 miles round trip. I should be able to add Kildare this year and maybe Offaly Wicklow and Leitrim if I get a new bike but that would be my limit. Maybe someone young and fit around the Midlands with a good bike could do all 32. I always cycle alone but no objection to pairs or groups doing this.

Have a look at the map and see how many you have so far and which ones you could aspire to. Not a competition as factors such as age, sex, bike and especially location would make it unequal, just for fun. I am 52 male with an old heavy bike and a couple of chronic medical conditions.

Anyone interested post your score and location and any other details you want to add. Could be something to plan for when/if Summer comes.

32 counties in 12 hours? Impossible.

Not 32 counties in 12 hours. Sorry if I didn't make it clear. You try to add a new county every day you go out but you have to get there and back home within 12 hours. For instance if you were in Dublin one day you could got to Wexford and another day to Cavan. Try to get as many as you can over however long it takes, years if you like.

From which county base would it be easiest to get to 32? Obviously someone based in Kerry is going to find it somewhat tough to get to Antrim and back in a day, but somewhere in the middle might have a chance.

I was in three on Sunday. How many points do I get for that?

Just thought 12 was a nice round number for the longer days. Leave your house at 9 or 10 in the morning and back home not later than 9 or 10 at night. See how far you can go on different days in different directions. Anyway like I said it's just an idea to see new places and cycle on new roads. I only ever did 9 hours or so.

If you wanted to do something ultra how about one long spin taking in all 32 counties in the shortest time you can staying in a couple of B & B's or whatever. This could be a competition as it would be fairly equal for everyone regardless of location.

A group from Westernlakes CC did 32 in 5 days round trip last August. They started in their home village of Robeen in Mayo.
Day 1 150 mls (Mayo, Sligo,Leitrim,Fermanagh,Donegal,Derry)to MaheraFelt in Derry
    Day 2 120 mls (Tyrone,Antrim,Down, Armagh,Louth, Monaghan,Cavan) to Cavan Town
    Day 3 165 mls (Meath,Dublin,Wicklow,Kildare,Laoise Carlow,Kilkenny,Wexford,Waterford)to Waterford City
    Day 4 155mls ( Cork, Kerry, Lim.Clare, Tip, Offaly,Galway)to Ballinasloe
    Day 5 120mls ( Westmeath,Longford, Roscommon) home.
So from here on Mayo/Galway border Mayo,Gal,Ros,Sligo,Leit.Ferman and Done and back would be up on 200 round trip,
Galway and Mayo are so big its even 100 round to Clare just to hit the Burren or 150 round to Westmeath just to hit Athlone and same for Longford.
