    Hi

I am in the process of pricing up some curtains for my living room. The material I have picked is 30 Euro/Metre...is this expensive as I have not shopped around? The shop have recomended a girl to make up the curtains and total cost with interlining will be about 600 Euro (this is for 14.5 metres of material). Is this extortionate? Have never got curtains made up before as you can gather!

They have recommended I purchase a 50 ml curtain pole, 10 Ft in length in a dark wood. Anyone recommend best place to purchase this without spending an absolute fortune?

    Thx

    G

    Hi G,
I have gotten curtains made up in the past. Prices of everything - Material, making up, poles - can vary greatly. E30 a metre is not hugely expensive. But you can get nice fabrics starting from E15 a metre, especially in the sales! Interlining - as opposed to plain lining - is quite costly and adds to the overall price, but is necessary to add warmth if you have picked a very light fabric, eg. a silk. For making up they are charging you E600 minus fabric price of E435 (14.5m x E30) which is E165 or approx e40 per width at 4 widths...this is a fairly reasonable makeup charge. This would remain the same even if you changed the fabric to one for E15 a metre, in which case your overall cost would go down to E385 approx.

Have you looked at readymade curtains before deciding to go for custom made? There is lots to choose from and prices are a lot cheaper.
50mm curtain poles are quite expensive. Personally I think they look better but if cost is an issue consider looking at homebase, woodies, harry corry etc. They have lots of 28-35mm poles which are quite acceptable.

I suppose overall it depends what you are happy to pay. I have spent E600 on curtains and E200 on poles in the past. But now I find it easier to do a revamp for E200 with cheaper poles/readymades...especially in these recessionary times! If you need any more help just ask...
