Bought an MG ZR last week. nice nippy car but completely not my style. not a boy racer in any way shape or form. was a complete impulse buy. being honest my test drive was around a car park. evrything is ok on the car but like i said, not my style. I traded in a 98 ford escort and paid 2400€, now i really liked my escort as it was as it was small but robust, thirsty but never gave an ounce o trouble. just wondering what you all think about this offer. im willing to go back to the garage, give back the 02 zr and accept 2k cash + the escort. As far as im concerned the garage has just made €400 for nothing. anyone think this could work? Ive mentioned it on another board but its not gettin any attention

My guess is your Escort's already gone to the trade. You could try, but my personal opinion is that it would be complete madness to trade the MG for €2k and a 98 Escort. I mean, do you really care that much what the MG looks like - you can't see it when you're driving it.

Hmm best of luck bringing back a Rover to a garage when the car is no longer in production.

Speaking as a sales person, although not a motor sales person, I would not be interested in taking back a car as my commision on that car would go out the window even if you(the buyer) accept a €400 loss.

I like the ZR and would prefer it over an escort myself.

OP - Having read the otherMG thread, I think you'd be better off having the garage who sold you the car do the (presumably gone) head gasket.

Wanna buy one :D. the thing is, i dont think theyre a dealership. its a mechanic and a panel beater, who sell cars aswell, so doubt commission wud come into it. It's a win win for the garage because regardless iff theyre still being made or not, theyre a cheap boy racer car.

Also im not sure iff its a head gasket. Ive checked all the seals, under the caps and there doesnt appear to be residue on any of them. IVe been told that it has to be constantly checked for coolant, another hassle that i don't need. they also have a 00 colt in their showroom, for 2700. might try and go for it. being honest i just want reliability,

    .

Whereas you can stroll in to a Ford garage and buy a brand new escort?

You should really be checking fluids on all cars regularly tbh.

Rover were still producing cars after the Escort was stopped. The fact that Rover are gone means little in this situation.

At least the Ford company still exists. People tend to stay away from car companies that went bust because eventually spares will become harder and harder to source.

You could possibly find a garage and buy a brand new escort. I would put money on it that somewhere in the world there is a unregistered escort gathering dust waiting to be loved.

Or you can buy this 2008 focus. Never went into production but heck I bet some exist

Theres probably a much higher chance of an unregged rover sitting somewhere than an escort. Parts are being produced for Rovers anyway.

so whats the general perception?? have i bought a lemon... i t wasnt a huge amount of money but its not the point. looking at carzone and carsireland the cheapest one is 2200 with about 20,000 miles more then mine. im thinking of advertising for the same price with the hope of scraping 2000. My mate loves th car but he has a 05 civic, so he aint gona buy it just really dont like anything about it except the colour i suppose. wud i get much on scrappage?

AFAIK you have to pay THEM to scrap your car. 500 squid.

There is nothing wrong with your car other than the fact you dont like it. Your hormones bought it not you by the sounds of it.

Just for clarity, do you not want the car because it's drinking coolant or do you not like the look of it, or do you not like something about the way it drives?

If I wasn't saving for the holiers I'd offer to take it off you for an unacceptably low price...

They're a nice enough car if they're running well, the HG won't be too expensive to fix - you have no warranty to worry about so use a indy to do the job and get the uprated gasket (land rover one I believe) in.

I'm already offering to take it off him for an unacceptably low price. I'd just like to know how unacceptably low he'll go.:)

Do you actually *want* a ZR, though? ;)

I toyed with the idea of getting one before I went for my current car, nearly bought one in NI (lovely gunmetal grey new body shape model) except it appeared to be close to HG failure and I decided to try to find one that was done.

And then I caved in and bought the Panda that was sitting outside Airton staring me in the face every morning instead.

ill see what the garage has to say tomorrow. been honest they have a 1.3 ghia fiesta there, id swap it for it if theyll take it. I dont like anything, it has a noisey powerful sounding engine, that aint that powerful or fast, it has stupid headlamps, no room for my coffee, stupid big spoiler on the back, just really not my thing. dont know why i got it, really ws spur of the moment. nut if im stuck with it, i think ll replace the water pump and head gasket on it anyway to e safe. anyone know where i can get em for a reasonable price

Presuming its a base model it shouldn't be as down on power as you suggest - they were 105bhp when the left the factory; when was it last serviced?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,341 ✭✭✭ssmith6287

apparantly a few weeks before i bought it. nah dont get me wrong, its quick. like i said my mate has a 1.4 civic and i beet him over a stretch, excellent handling aswell. its the noise i hate. e.g my dads 1.6 focus is virtually silent but leaves mine for dead. its like the saxos, puntos etc going round with big exhausts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71,186 ✭✭✭✭L1011

That would be because it has got a big exhaust ;) just one fitted by Rover rather than aftermarket I would assume.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,341 ✭✭✭ssmith6287

awh yeah its the standard one but she grunts but cant back it up with real power

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71,186 ✭✭✭✭L1011

Thats pretty standard of a hot hatch of that price; mostly sound/looks. My own is much the same, even though its close on twice the power/weight ratio of the normal model of the same - the ZR compared to a Rover 25 would work out the same.
