The price of tyres

My father bought two new tyres for my car, they didn't put a new tyre on the spare. It cost my father €70 for two. I've gone back and bought one for the spare, in the same shop and it cost me €45. I said that my father had bought two tyres from them and it cost him €70. He wasn't having any of it and looked at all the tyres and told him that he matched the spare with the back tyres.

I was expecting it to be a tenner less. I'm disapointed now.

What size did your father buy and what size did you buy? Were they different brands? All this will make a difference...

edit - apologies, didnt read it correctly!! my bad...

You are a girl. Of course it cost you more. :)

Your father may simply have gotten a discount for buying two tyres instead of one.

Did you query the price with the shop?

I don't know, I just asked for a new tyre.

I didn't think it would make that much of a difference, I thought they would have given me the same ones as he got.

I don't know, he didn't seem to remember. Accually when I did tell him about it his words were 'a few years ago he would have' and started laughing.

Must be pretty small tyres, those prices are very cheap.

And why did he buy 2...?
You're suppose to use 4 matched tyres... :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

Eh... tyres on the driven wheels tend to wear far faster than the other two?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 230 ✭✭bmcgrath

And don't garages swap the rear tyes to the front at certain intervals when the car is in for a service?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,462 ✭✭✭Orla K

The car's a corsa, so it's fairly small. I'd guess that the tyres are also small.

Well I've to hand over €95 (each) for 2 new Dunlop tyres for my Passat tomorrow so you're getting off lucky! :)

Jesus, learn to shop around.... camskill.co.uk

When you get them, you'll get them fitted and balanced for about €50

I recently got 4 tyres for €147 from them

You are talkin sh1te man. Tyres on either axle should be the same but even minor wear differences across an axle wouldnt cause a problem. With quattro cars, All 4 wheels should be of equivalent size (rolling radius) but even these cars can cope with some differences.

So if you happened to damage a tyre on a pothole, you would run out and buy 4 new tyres?

Also, why dont all tyre centres sell only 4 tyre packages so?

Don't give them any ideas :pac:

I had a look on there and it's not much cheaper for what I need (215/55/R16)

Vredestein (recommended to me previously by people here) ... £90
    Goodyear ... £80

Add in shipping and the conversion rate and you're already up to €185+
Then as you said, you've to get them fitted/balanced for another €50

That's about €230 so if anything it's a fair bit dearer. Yes they have cheaper options too, but I do a lot of driving in my job and don't think the saving would be worth it in the long term. I stand to be corrected though..

I did shop around and asked for the different tyre options and was quoted anywhere from €90-150 for "brand name" tyres, but if someone can tell me where I can get 2 Vredestein tyres supplied and fitted in the Meath/Dublin area for less than the €190 I've been quoted for the Dunlop's then I'd really appreciate it :)

The rears on mine (255/40/17) cost about €200 each. The fronts are slightly narrower and cost about €170 each.
    I'm just glad that I don't have 18" rims!

Same here. I use 235s - €150 each recently. Had a blow-out two weeks ago and got one replaced and then had to get another two replaced last week.
It's been an expensive fortnight. :o

That a UK site, right? So do they operate in ROI also?

    I have 225/40/18's on mine
Looking around 190 - 220 per corner in ROI
Same tyres are €80 - €100 on camskill

    BMW right?

What tyres for the back are €200? I was quoted nearer €300 for Continental Sport Contact 2s for the 255/40/17 and €240 for same brand/type for the front (225/45/17)

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators Posts: 41,235 Mod ✭✭✭✭Seth Brundle

I have Dunlops on the back now IIRC.
The fronts still have Eagle F1 IIRC - they are 235/45 which I would presume yours should be.

I'll check again but nearly certian I have 225s on the front. (2004 3series Compact Sport). Just checked on-line and can get Uniroyal sports delivered for all 4 corners for about €600. Do you think the local tyre shop will fit them for me? A bit like a previous thread on suppling you own parts for a service.

    Hi Kaiser,
I'm in the same situation as yourself. Where were you quoted the 95 each? Does that include fitting etc?

We are travelling to Lisburn to buy a child seat.
    (Saving €130)

We need to get 4 new tyres(195/65/R15) can anyone recommend a garage? I have been quoted €115 per tyre here in Athlone

They deliver here, but you need to get a local fitter to fit/balance them. If they're not ones they sell themselves it won't be a problem but some places won't like you bringing in tyres rather than not buying them off them.

You cant be serious. You realize a lot of cars end up in the scrappy after accidents. How do you know the tyres haven't been damaged? That would be a very silly thing to do if you ask me

i would kill for tyres costing 45 euro a piece.... no such luck in the 255/70/18 V market

    same 255/40/17 (Dunlops SP Sport 9000) and a 235/40/17 (Goodyear GS-D3s)

Fishtits remembers the last recession... buying second hand tyres for his steed (no 18" wheels back then...:))

205/60/15 on current transport, have had it for many yrs now, never paid more than 100 bucks per cover, currently Bridgestones.

    Haggle. ;)
