Problem adding a longer cable

I've got a wierd problem adding a longer cable to my UPC digital socket. My wife decided she wanted to relocate the TV in the living room. So I got a couple of screw on "F" connectors and a barrel connector ( for joining two F connectors) in Maplins. I used a piece of coax cable (about 10 feet) left by the UPC engineer when we got digital TV about two months ago.

Connected everything up, but when I plug the cable into the TV (through the Thompson box) I get a "Loss of Signal" error. I double checked all the connections making sure there were no stray braid wires touching the core etc. I removed the barrel connector and tried another one, but no luck. I did a continuity test on the new cable and everything seems fine.

As a last resort and as a temporary measure I removed the "F" connectors at the UPC box and the new cable and and soldered the core of the two ends of the coaxial cable together and everything works, but as soon as I join the braided wires together I lose the signal again. I tried a new lenght of cable, but the same problem persists.

If I connect the TV back the way it was originally everything works fine. I thought maybe the signal is too weak for the extra distance, but why then does it work if I join just the cores of the cable? Incidentally if I switch over to analogue with everything connected properly it works fine

Anybody got any idea what might be the problem?

    Thanks.
