Summer Work

    Hi,

Long time reader, first time poster in this section! :)

I'm a med student studying in Cork and I'm starting to think about my summer. Realistically, I'm going to need a job :( So I thought, why not something cool/interesting/beneficial (dare I say it...) educational!

So I was just wondering what kind of summer jobs do people know of in hospitals that might be suitable for a med student? Anybody have any previous experience of what they are like? Is there any particularly good way of applying for them etc.?

Sorry about all the questions - thanks!

I used to work as HCA in Galway and agency in Dublin during the summers. However I had to give it all up last summer as there was feck all agency work due to the big HSE freeze :( It was a great job, long hours, tired sore feet and back breaking (in 5'2"!) but I learned more than I ever would out of a book. Plus old ladies loved me :)

Im also on the hunt for summer ideas, feel free to share :o

    Hey,
Yeah, I was only talking to a doctor the other day who worked as an agency HCA throughout his training and actually made more money doing that, than he did as an intern!the money is really good, especially if you are willing to do nights and weekends and its totally flexible.
But I joined Nurse on Call last summer in early June and they told me they wouldn't have any work til late august..kinda defeats the point of a summer job:(
Anyhow, I'm in the same boat, looking for work but I think if you can get in with a decent agency and you are getting regular shifts then that would be the best option.
    Good Luck!
    Sue.

I'm in the same predicament- just wondering has anyone had any offers in the recent past, and any more ideas?? I would preferably like to get a job in the Midlands somewhere, as I would like to catch up on some home comforts.

Ideally, I would love to have a "job", but would be totally willing to do an elective of a few weeks duration for no pay- i.e. the experience!!

Is anyone aware of any electives that are available in the Midlands??

Anyone have any ideas now that Ireland is in the depths of a recession? Im thinking its going to be mighty hard to find a job in the next few weeks :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 923 ✭✭✭Chunky Monkey

Hospitals aren't using agencies any more. Damn recession, have to stay in England over the summer :( You should try getting a job in a local nursing home though, you'll get great experience as care assistants practically run them.

I'm not looking forward to this summer - I don't want to be left sitting on my ass all day doing nothing. I had a summer job lined up with the Marine Institute but the government has apparently pulled the plug on the funding for it. So - ummm - I have a PhD to start in September; I may just ask them if I can start earlier.

    WHAT?!

I emailed the MI asking when we were finding out if we were gonna be told who was successful or not - she told me that they are waiting to find out if funding will be approved. I got this email was last friday!

Were you told if you were successful or not? I applied for LCMS Analysis of Shellfish Biotoxins, as I was doing my final year project in.... LCMS Analysis of Shellfish Biotoxins! I figured I was a shoe-in! :D

I also had a project lined up this summer but its near impossible to get funding so it looks like im going to have to pull out. I would love to be able to do it for free but unfortunately I have to save for next year :( Hence im pretty afraid I cant get a job.

    Hey,

I think that one was in my top three choices too. Did I say that I was successful though? Sorry - I didn't mean to. What I meant was that they made it seem like I was successful at the interview stage (i.e. it went very well!).

I had also rang them a few times and they said firstly that there was admin problems. Then, my mam rang and they told her that they're almost certain it won't go ahead. That's a real shame because I was looking forward to it!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,302 ✭✭✭sunnyjim

You're an industrial biology man though - I thought you'd be going for the micro side of shellfish, not the chemical one!

My interview was ok, I didn't come out feeling great about it to be honest. So they say it probably wont go ahead - that's a bloody shame. And quite a let down that we can't know until the end of May.

Cheers for getting back to me Kevster (was it my pestering?!:pac:)

Sure if it does go ahead we still might get it.... The official boards.ie summer of marine research!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,980 ✭✭✭Kevster

Oh bugger - yeh - sorry - it was the micro part that I applied for! I don't know what i'll do for the Summer if it doesn't go ahead. I was really banking on this after the interview was so successful, but now... ....umm... ...yeh, I dunno.

When you think about it though, we were only going to get around €2,200 each, right?; and there was only going to be 30-something candidates. That's not much money to set aside by the government, and it would have been very good for each of us on our CVs for the future.

    Kevin

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,302 ✭✭✭sunnyjim

Sure at the end of the day, we're an island nation - there are so many marine resources at our hands that the government should be happy to hand over under half a mill to get 360 extra weeks of research done within a year, as well as expanding the knowledge and experience of graduating scientists.

The benefit for the students is great, but the benefit in giving the country 30 students better skills and experience for future employers is surely worth consideration.

Back on topic - Med student, do you fancy doing any conservation work?

There's a thing with the VSO that I've been considering too. It's not really biology-related, but you get to live abroad for 2 years. They even give you a few grand when you come back to Ireland to settle down again. Who knows... ...in two years, this economic **** might have improved a lot so it could be worth looking into.

Did you get that email from the Marine Institute sunnyjim? Apparently, it's not entirely dead in the water yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,954 ✭✭✭✭Larianne

Definitely get your CVs into private nursing homes. They're always looking for relief staff. Follow up a week later with the HR manager to see if they've received your CV.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,302 ✭✭✭sunnyjim

    Got it today Kevster.

Not dead, but at this rate, some people will only have 3 weeks notice of getting the position. This includes finding accomadation, handing in notices, cancelling holidays!! Ugh!! I'm SO STRESSED :pac::D

    Hopefully we'll know soon.

    Hi,

To be honest, I've already began to apply elsewhere just in case. I have a PhD to start over in England in September too, and I'm considering just going over there after my exams and getting work there until it starts.

Hey everyone, i applied for the MI thing too, got that email that they'll "let us know".. which is a pain! I applied for the biochemical and chemical anaylsis, and smiled at them and told them that i'd be happy to work in whatever position i was given.... very disappointed :(

Me thinks they be fobbing us all off...

But if anyone knows of a job someone with a near 1st average in chemistry and biology can do, let me know!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,302 ✭✭✭sunnyjim

    Kevster... Anything to tell us?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,980 ✭✭✭Kevster

    Hi,

Yeh, it looks like they're going ahead. I got a call this evening from them at around 7PM and they offered me #14 (Shellfish Microbiology). I've accepted it too. You applied for the chemistry version of this one, didn't you Jim? They might not have called all applicants yet because, remember, I didn't get the call until 7PM, on a Friday too.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,185 ✭✭✭tatabubbly

Ah looks like i didn't get it, well thats a bit of a disappointment... :(

How do you think I knew you'd gotten a call?

    :D

Got a voicemail at 8:30 last night, I figure it's good news - although, I still have to get back to them to find out exactly what's up. So if I've gotten it - which I don't actually know yet - then I have to start looking up accomodation!

    What you doing about that?

    Oh, and congrats!!

Nope! :( Quite annoyed, i would of liked the idea of actually getting some science based experience this year..

Any one know if places will take in people who volenteer to work for free?

Ah that sucks. What year are you in? Did you try apply for any of the Ureka programs?

In final year chemistry and biology.. however now that i think about it i was on the phone all last night.. i did phone them to check but it's just the answering machine..

No ureka programmes, couldn't stand to be hanging around college any more than these two weeks! I'm taking a year out and then hopefully i'll get into a pharmacy course...

sunnyjim, I actually had a feeling that you had received a call, judging by the way you had asked me if I had "anything to tell". It just seemed a bit out of place, if you know what I mean ;) Is your one based in Oranmore too?; and it's the shellfish one too, right? If so, it looks like we could be working in the same lab on the same samples!

...Very busy now. Sorry to hear that you didn't get a call, tatabubbly, but wait until Monday to see what happens.

    Kevin

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,302 ✭✭✭sunnyjim

Well, I gave my 3 preferred options - so it depends on which one I've gotten!

    Later y'all

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,980 ✭✭✭Kevster

Oh yeh, let me know what you get. The one I got was my first choice, thankfully. I remember the interview that I had and it went unbelievably well.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,302 ✭✭✭sunnyjim

    Ka-ching!

See you on the 9th - got my first choice. Got the biotoxin unit. Now to sort out accomodation.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,980 ✭✭✭Kevster

Cool, so you will be working with me! Did she call you to give you all of the main details? I presume that she must have, considering that you've mentioned the 9th June (Induction day). Oh, I've pretty much already sorted out my accomodation by the way (I've got my own bedsit/one-bedroomed place.... ...:o There's lots there though - You should have no problem. I might not be starting until the 22nd. i'm going to ring the supervisor tomorrow to see about that.

What age are you by the way, and what are you studying? i'm 26 and am just finishing my honours degree in Industrial Biology.

    Take care dude,
    Kevin

I'm doing Med Chem, and I'm just under 3 years your junior!

I'm looking into getting a duplex or something in the city. I'm gonna splash out and get a vehickle for the duration, means I can travel to work every morning!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,980 ✭✭✭Kevster

Bloody hell... ...no recession where you are!:p I'll see you on the 9th I'm sure. Did you ring your supervisor yet? I rang mine and agreed that I won't officially start until the 22nd June. You gonna start the week before then? I have a lot of things upcoming before then.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,302 ✭✭✭sunnyjim

No recession in my credit union more like!

I'll have to see what date is offered. I work part-time in a lab so I'd like to satisfy both. There are some great places to stay, I'm seing places for under 80 quid, 1 room in a 3 bedroom house, staying with 2 female professionals. Slap in between Oranmore and the city.

    Giggidygiggidygiggidygiggidygiggidygiggidy!

Now how to explain that to the girlfriend... Is the 9th an all day affair? I've baggsed the car for that day so I'll be setting off from Dublin around 6am, flask of soup beside me at the wheel!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,980 ✭✭✭Kevster

Good question (about the induction day). I imagine that it'll go on up to lunchtime and then for an hour or two afterwards. I think that the lady said there would be lecturs given or something. I'm actually going to email them to find out.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,302 ✭✭✭sunnyjim

I'm starting a few weeks after you. If you see any great places to rent in between Oranmore and the city, throw a link this way!!

The bursarys from my college have not been anounced yet and I am not too hopeful of getting one as they are hugely competative. However my supervised has offered to allocate some funding from the overall project!

    Long time... Been busy!!

I start in mid-July man. I'm going mad though, because I can't get accomodation anywhere. No where will take a short 8 week lease, and those who will are booked out for Race week. I never though Galway would be so hard to find accomodation in.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,980 ✭✭✭Kevster

Wait until after the race week. The prices should drop a fair bit. You still have time dude. Where are you looking exactly? Try this one out:

    http://www.centrepointgalway.com/

Are you going to the induction day? I can't make it because I'll be in England. I told the institute about it though. Have you sorted your tax out too?
