    Hello all,

After recently loosing my car to a couple of nice gentlemen who kindly tore it apart, I am in the market for a new car!

I am considering going up North to purchase one. Now I am aware that vrt will be added to the overall price, however, does this have to be sorted before you drive the car down south or can it be done after your bring it home?

Also, my main question is that I was talking to a friend recently who claims there is the odd number of dealers up there that will sort out vrt etc for you. Is this the case and if so are you aware of any such dealers?

    Thanks in advance!

I am very aware that Charles Hurst in Belfast and Toyota in Enniskillen will look after it.

AFAIK you cannot drive a car across the border on UK plates if you like permanently in Ireland.

Their adverts state they will look after this for you. Sure, it can all be done online.

Mat cooper was on about n. ireland dealers who arrange everything for you just this evening on radio show. It seems they will now sell the car with vrt paid and irish plates fitted. Would save a trip to the revenue at least.
You have until the end of the next working day to get the vrt paid here so no problem driving it down if you buy it on an english plate

The Charles Hurst Group had a 2 page ad in the Irish Miirror a couple of weeks back, giving prices in Euro, which included VRT. Not sure if they actually sort that out for you though.

Did you hear their ad on the radio. They said they WILL take Irish trade ins against their NI stock.

How can they possibly manage that?

There is no vrt equivilent in the north, as far as i know you just apply for
local plates when taxing the car.
Anyone looking to buy a new car in the north should check out Desmond motors in Derry (Ford dealer), they hav prices in euro with vrt paid and seem to be cheaper than hursts etc. Worth a look!

Well they are obviously not going to get them registered in uk as this would be devaluing the car. I guess they will try to sell them to the south again at a price similar to what an identical uk car with vrt paid would sell for. That would mean a poor trade in price in most cases and you would probably be as well trading in at an irish dealer.

Lol, no..... thats totally wrong. The Tax office will be more than happy to take the VRT off you the next day or whenever you pop round to them.

OP, read the sticky. Its no big deal at all, just get the VRT done yourself (as easy as handing in a form and cheque), you'll educate yourself a bit in the process.

I have heard from a friend who is big into his cars, that one dealer (can't remember which one) has a link with a independent car dealer in Donegal and they will take the trade in if your happy with the price your getting.Maybe it's the same in other border counties.
