Hi I'm hoping someone can help me please.
My husband bought a new opel astra 1.4 in 2005, it had its timing belt/chain (i think it's belt) replaced in opel garage in october 2007 when car had 33k on it.
he took it to a friend who is a mechanic today to have a glace over as car is due it's ntc, the timing belt need replacing again. It's only been 16 months and is not covered under warranty. It has also only done 10k since last time it was replaced.
Can anyone shed some light on why this has happened again?

Thats a very short interval - what made the friend think it needed doing again?

My husband said he thought there was a noise coming from engine, and that he had to fill it with oil last week. So he checked and said it was going again, he brought it back to garage where it was replaced in oct 2007 and it's going in later in the week for them to look at it.

The interval should always be the same, i.e. every 40 or 50 thousand miles. Not 33k and then 10k. That is just not correct. However, your mechanic friend coould be just covering himself, but why? If the belt was changed (for sure) 10k miles ago, there should be no need to change unless there is damage to the bearings on one of the accioated pumps (water usually) that the belt also drives. In that case you would have to remove the timing belt to access the pump to repair the bearing, and it would be easy to change the belt then. I think the belts are cheap, as parts go, but the labour costs would be high. So when all the stripping is done for the pump, it would be a good time to change the belt also.

I'm a bit confused here... First a mechanic looked at it and said it needed a new timing belt, then your husband looked at it after hearing a noise from the engine and identifying an oil consumption problem and he reckoned it needed a new timing belt and it is going to a garage next week for another diagnosis??? It sounds like a case of too many cooks in the kitchen here to be honest...

was the car lying idle for long periods of time? this can affect a timing belt

No my husband thought there was a noise last week, he then checked oil and replaced oil, as it is due for nct he took it to his friend to have a look at it to be sure. Friend said the timing belt needed replacing. Husband then went straight from friends garage to oringinal opel garage where car was bought and timing belt was replaced back in 2007 so they booked him in for later in week.

No car is driven everyday as he uses it to get to work.

The most likely explanation I can see here is that the friend who advised that the timing belt needed to be replaced now, was not aware that this job was already done at 33K.
