VW: Sticky central locking and 'Safe 1000' Radio

Lately my central locking (non-remote) has felt a bit sticky, it still locks but there's a bit of resistance or slowness about it when I'm trying to get the key out. Today the radio has started flashing 'Safe 1000' which I gather might indicate an electrical problem.

The car is a polo, 2003. Is there a chance it's anything simple or would it most likely require my mechanic taking a look at it?

    Cheers.

Spray a little bit of WD40 into the key way and see if that helps - a little lubrication may help free out the lock.

SAFE 1000 means that the code needs to be entered before the radio will work. Check the inside cover of the instruction manual for the radio - the code should be printed on a small sticker. The radio manual should be in the pack with the rest of the vehicle manuals.
