Since getting my fw 2 years ago for commuting i have been using it for more and more me my cycling so that my geared bike now sits unused on a turbo. Toying with the idea of getting a carbon bike to regain my interest. Anyone else here just using a fixie for their long distance cycles?

Nope, mine is strictly a commuter. I wouldn't mind racing on the flat, but I don't think I am anywhere near able to do the kind of climbing that the likes of Blorg and Neill do on theirs. I can feel my joints wearing away as I think about it.

My fixie is for commute only. I've very little interest for using it for long distances. That said, I'm toying with the idea of doing the Wicklow 100 on it as I'll be riding support for the old man. The reason for that is so I'm not tempted to drop him ;)

As much as I heartily approve of fellow boardsies having multiple bikes, if you find yourself riding one bike all the time to the exclusion of others, what's wrong with that?

That said, you might get bored after a while. I was a fixie-head for a long time, but have rediscovered the joys of geared bikes once again (mostly cos i don't live in the city anymore). but I'll always have a fixie in my shed.

Recently did a 50k (mostly flat) run on it (the fixie), which was a great workout.

Not sure if it the same thing, but my fixie came to spain with me last november, it was cycling fixie holiday, best thing for visiting a city, hop on your bike at the airport. no waiting for buses or cabs :) Fixie Tourism FTW!!!

Thanks for that. Some of it may be that the fixie is a nicer ride than my other bike. So planning an upgrade to carbon...well see. Keep an eye out on adverts in a few months!

just do what blorg may be planning for the W200 and get a white industries eccentric ENO hub (http://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/white-hubs.html) and have a titanium litespeed fixie. or up grade to a carbon fixie......

i was a fixie only man up until last spring, and i do still see the appeal of keeping it pure. the thing that really persuaded me that the was a place in my life for coasting was the new thrill of speed on the descent i got the first few times coming down from the sally gap or wicklow gap. i bloody love the sensation of trying to get as small and low on the bike as possible and cheat the air into letting me go just a little bit faster. or leaning the bike over and really carrying speed through a corner. i don't care how comfortable you are spinning on the fixed wheel, you will never keep up with someone with a big gear who can coast. that tempt you?

the fact that i'm afraid to tackle the wiclow climbs without the artifice of the dérailleur may have something to do with it too - but we'll gloss over that for the purposes of this discussion.

am i the only one who finds the title of this thread a little melodramatic? :P
