Why cant barbers do what I ask for?

I dont like my hair too short, just to have some length in it and kept tidy. Anyway whenever I go to a barber when they ask what I want done I say just tidy it up and take a small bit off! Yet I always seem to leave with far too much hair cut off! So then i have to wait ages to let it grow again and when it needs to be tidied up the same thing will happen again! And its not just one barber, its everyone I go to.

Is there some other way I should be asking them to do it?

ask for the opposite of what you want

I dont think asking for a no. 1 all over is the solution to my problem. I would like some real help here!

You're being vague to the barber, be more specific about the area, like the top etc, also, if you can, maybe get an idea for the 'blade' used, so if you want something longer, avoid that..

Not only do barbers screw up people with long hair but also us skinheads.
That to can be HACKED.Go to a proper barber and if there is a queue, get on it .:)I presume you don't go to to a Ladys place ?

Well I always state I dont want a blade and I do say to "leave the length in the top just even it out".

I've tried many places in Galway and thought I was happy with Fat Tonys but they even seem to be going downhill

Change your barber. Do you live in Dublin? If you do, then there's lots of great barbers that don't want to leave you looking like Harry Hill.

It can be a little harder if your from the sticks. Whenever i go home to countryside, i find it hard to find a good barber.

Barbers don't really care what you want, go to a hairdressers

Poncy as it sounds, I've usually had better luck in hairdressers than in men only barbers. Although I did go to a barbers near the junction of Fairview Strand and Annesly Bridge Road before that was really good, not sure if he's still there.

I think I'd give a hairdresser a chance, she might do a better job? But then again, some hairdressers are known to butcher and not do what you want too! Have you tried looking for a picture of what you want? My boyfriend goes to the same barber and every time he goes he asks for the same cut but never gets the same thing twice!

I'm going back again this week for a haircut, going to try the new Fat Tony's near Eyre square. Any suggestions on a style (pics would be great!)

Tell them you're growing it and can you have a four on the side- when you tell them you're trying to grow it they only barely trim it.

    Perfect

Barbers only know how to do a blade cut with a number attached to it - youll have to find a girlie hairdressers to get a proper haircut rather than a short back and sides.

Ya I might they a hairdressers but like I asked, any suggestions on a nice style for a guy (pics would also be a help!)?

    I feel for you man, I'm a guy obsessed with his hair and I've had the 'short' haircuts before! Salons are probably the best place to guy, I go to Peter Marks just outside Jervis but there's other less expensive places to go, just try and stay away from a lot of the barbers, they'll just blade you. Wot type of hair are you into? I go for a lot of the spiked styles like;

I am in the same situation, I want to get a haircut but I dont want to loose the length so what do I ask for? And is there anything that can be done to add more thickness to your hair?

So when you go to these places do you point to a style in the magazine, or what? just curious, I tend to do barbers as well and agree on how variable they can be.

Ive come to the conclusion that barbers can only cut one style and that is your average short back and side - it drives me mad. I recently went to grafton barber and as I was telling the guy what I wanted his reply was " sure if you dont like it after you could always shave it of .

I'm finished with barbers then are just incapable of doing the job in hand

I have brought pictures in before, as they say a picture is worth a thousand words! Anyway that's how hairdressers are trained, copying styles from pictures. I have quiet thick hair so usually I just get it thinned out, which still leaves you with all the length.

TIGI Bed Head Cocky Thickening Paste is quite good for styling your hair to get fuller/thicker look

Lesson is don't go to a barber. You can tell them anything you want but they'll always just cut it short back and sides. I went for years thinking each time "I just need to make it clearer this time that I dont want it short, he'll understand". Nope. Always the same. I just get my sisters housemate to cut my hair now (used to work professionally). If I didnt use him I'd be using a salon

Go to a hairdresser then if you are having problems with barbers.!

if you go to a hairdressers and explain your problem they'll do the look you want and also give advice on what style will suit you best.
their advice is going to be better than mine!

also i noticed in house of colour that a girls haircut is 65 and a boys is 28.
cant complain about price really now

I normally just keep my hair shaved for ease but am letting it grow at the moment and wondering if anyone can recommend a good salon in Dublin that's good with men's styles and short hair? I've been to Peter Mark and Toni and Guy before and find that both places are pretty conservative so usually when I want a style I just cut it myself. The problem is that cutting one's own hair is a bit of a pain in the neck, literally.

    Sorted so!

Scruffy Joe's on Abbeygate street. When my hair was longer, he was the only person I'd trust not to make a complete balls of it. I suppose it helps that he has long hair himself. But I'd recommend his establishment wholeheartedly and without reserve.
