New Groupset

I think my derailleurs are a bit knackered as shifting is getting rather cumbersome and unreliable no matter what adjustments I make, so I'm considering replacements.

Here is what I currently have:
    9 speed cassette
    105 front and rear derailleurs
    105 shifters
    Ultegra crankset

I'd like to make the replacement Ultegra 10 speed since my second bike is 10 speed and it will make it easier to swap wheels.
My hope is that I will only have to change the front and rear derailleurs and the cassette.
Will my 9speed 105 shifters and my Ultegra crankset need to be changed if I want 10 speed?

    P

I would say the shifters would need to be changed - I think the cable pull on 10 speed is sufficently different to 9 speed that the two won't work together.

    Edit: According to this...

I think the crankset should be ok.

What about crankset? Am I OK with my existing Ultegra cranks?

It all depends on the exact model of ultegra etc as aparently the spacing changes both front and rear for 10-speed.

What about your wheels, or hubs, are they 10-speed compatible?

    Yup, wheels are fine.

Looks like I'd need to change the shifters also, bummer. That basically doubles the price.

You should just go super record 11-speed. :D

Just kidding. It looks like buying a whole new group set could be the way to go -- I mean you might as well get new cranks and shave another few grams. Perhaps Ultegra-SL would be a good investment purchase.

I can't see why the crankset would need to be changed:

I would have thought that the difference in chain width might cause a problem, I'm not sure, but you should probably get new chainrings anyway.

PBK are selling the Chorus 09 11 speed for just under 800 euro, tempting???

If I go down this route, you can certainly have first dibs on em. Don't hold your breath waiting for them though as I tend to move slowly on things like this :)

Are you taking the piss... thats exactly what it is...

Maybe start a poll.... SRAM RED, SUPER RECORD, or DA (with electrics), or Lightweight Gear. We promise not to spend more than E4,000 - not including misc extras.

If the shifting's gone crappy, you may just need new cables.

This is your Allez, right? I'd stick Di2 on it.

Actually, +1 on that, I spent hours trying to adjust the rear derailleur on my Focus, replaced the cable, 30 seconds of adjustment and it was shifting perfectly.

It would certainly be cheaper, and I suppose I can live with still having 9 speed.

You could get a Centaur Carbon groupset for about the same as the SRAM Rival. Then you'd maybe need new hubs, and sure you might as well get new wheels while you're at it. And you should probably put new tyres on to get the best out of them...

I can see this ending up as an upgrade after which the only surviving part is the bottlecage :D

Although, in truth, it's worth trying the new-cables option first.

I know it's not in stock (ha ha Scott, I read the whole thing this time), but would this be all I needed in order to overhaul the cables?

Better get a decent pair of cable cutters too. And while you're at it, give the derailler springs a good blasting with wd40 or something to clean them out a bit.

Yes. 5/6mm allen key, cable cutters, and potentially bar tape but thats all. its a pretty simple job.

Thats pretty much it you shouldnt need bar tape for shimano unless you are changing brake cables (that could be gears tho), if you need a loan of a crimping tool for a cable ends let me know looks better than using a pliers to crimp them,

You don't even need that entire set, you probably won't need to replace the outers (I didn't.)

    Two gear cable inners £1.56
Cable Ends (Bag of 10) £1.52

That's all you need to fix your gears... You do need proper cable cutters also if you don't have them already.

I'd probably replace the housing too. It can get corroded and gunked up.

    Sheldon says yes:
Going the other direction, using wider chains with chainrings intended for narrower chains is not generally a major problem if there's only a one or two generation difference. The only problem you might run into is that the chain will be more liable to rub on the inside of the bigger cbainrings in the small/small crossover gears, gears you shouldn't be using in any case.
