I was just wondering if anyone knows do the traffic corp have the same speed camera's that they have in the gatso vans in the back of there estate cars or why do the traffic corps have estate cars at all?

    dsc10234.jpg

What do they need the room in the back for? All I ever see them doing is parked up somewhere speed checking

What if they want to carry stuff like traffic cones and signs to set up a check point?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,155 ✭✭✭✭Berty

I dont know about the speed cameras but the Gardai carry with them a mobile scales which is orange. They place it in front of the wheels of a truck/van and the van moves forward onto the piece and then the approximate weight is taken and this could justify them enough to bring the truck to the weigh unit.

Also, traffic cones, flashing led strobes, etc etc.

Good point but I've only ever seen Garda Jeeps at check points, I've only ever seen the Garda estate car parked up speed checking.

Was just wondering had they moved from gatso vans to gatso estates really

Was it a regular estate or one painted up in the garda colours? If it was regular I would say it is because they buy ALL SORTS of weird vehicles now, to avoid being easily detected by potential speeders/bold motorists..

In that case I'll just echo previous posters & say the "handy extra storage" space :)

Dont know exactly what they carry in Traffic cars but in my district car we have:

    2 x Checkpoint signs
    2 x Accident Ahead signs
    1 x Stinger
    1 x box of Meprolights
    2 x First Aid kits
1 x box for Speed gun
1 x Large box which contains spray can, scene tape, measuring tape, gloves, extra lights
    1 x fire extinguisher

here is a pic of a traffic car where you can see shelves with alot more stuff than found in a regular patrol car. I suppose this traffic car could be considered a support vehicle in that it will have extra of everything for the more serious traffic accidents say serious injuries, fatalities or the accidents that occur on national routes or motorways

FYI when that private company comes here they'll have the MUltaNova units installed in a good few 'civilian' vehicles and tripod variations :(

I've seen some estates in Arklow/Gorey Traffic but not elsewhere in a good while. The estate was useful for its longer wheelbase, gave it an extra bit of sturdyness in high speed conditions.

All the latest cars in my unit have been saloons, two mondeos, an opel vectra TD and an unmarked bmw 320, shared between us and another unit.

I've seen the 3 series estate around Wexford alright. There are also a few 3 series saloons (325i perhaps?) unmarked. I spotted them carrying out a few speed traps the last while. I also came across a Marked Volvo V70 on the gorey bypass northbound carrying out a speed trap in the rest area.

On a different note, i got pulled over on Saturday night by an unmarked new shape Mondeo, with what looked like a camera in the dash. ANPR found its way into Garda vehicles yet?

I saw a marked car in the RDS recently with the system fitted, 3 cameras + a laptop under the seat.

Yes they began installing them last November. I did hear that 200 units are to be installed

Its not much use if it can't detect insurance dodgers.

How so? If thats the case, what will they be able to pick up? Motor Tax and NCT?

There's no insurance database as of yet . Tax and other flags on the vehicle, not sure about NCT, I'd hazard a guess at no ,knowing this country :P centuries behind the times :pac:

Not yet it cant but Ive heard they are working on that. The only problem though is it will only catch vehicles that are not insured, not if the driver is uninsured.

Aye thats true but the UK has has ANPR for a few years now whereas we are only starting out.

There is also a small bug in the ANPR which needs to be sorted out first before the insurance thingy.

So as a brief overview in Garda cars these days:

    they have:

Hand held Speed guns (but not gatso type cameras)
all the bits and bobs for traffic accidents & checkpoints
    Stinger capability
    ANPR cameras with TAX/NCT recognition

would that be a fair summary?

    That you PJ?!:p:p

Seeing as we are on the topic, would many/any AGS cars carry weapons in the boot or otherwise or are all firearms kept at the station?

Not talking about the likes of the ERU but your everyday marked and unmarked units.

Marked cars would not have any firearms cos uniformed Gardai are not allowed carry them. Some occupants of an unmarked would be armed with personal issue Smith&Wesson or the Sig

Nog is spot on. We also have folding cones x 10, a shovel, a brush (both never used, that what fire service do cant be crossing that line!!!!) a box with blood/urine kits, a yellox haz box for used alco tubes, and 2x flashing magnitic directional arrows. Estates are used for the extra space and they are much better to drive than saloons. The Jeeps and Galaxy (above) are support and patrol vehicles. They are not generally response vehicles. Drive them slow boys!!!

    O O O ya and blankets too.....in case we get cold:D

Do you keep the doughnuts in the boot at well? I expect not as they would be too hard to get at. ;)

The ANPR check points over here are quite impressive. Driving along, minding your own business drive round a corner and there is about 20 coppers waiting for some action.
