I'd be inclined to look to the old mantra about getting what you pay for.

It says its 10.9kg fully assembled - surely you'd expect a fixie to be less that that.

    Or am I wrong?

    **knows nothing about fixies**

10.9kg is entirely possible, it's a cheap (heavy) steel frame and fork and the deep section wheels probably weigh quite a bit too. IIRC for example my Specialized Tricross which has an aluminum frame and carbon fork weighs in around the 10.5kg mark (it's not a particularly light fixie mind.)

Its a pity - it looks awesome in orange with the black wheels and for £175 ~ €190, it looked like the cheap commuter bike I was after.
Still tempted - Having no gears on the commute run would be a good thing for me I reckon, the bikes weight might not though.

As ever. Thanks for the smarts guys.

If your commute is flat enough that lack of gears isn't a problem, then the weight won't be either.

ISTR 10kg is only worth 0.7kph at 30kph, so a couple of kg won't make much difference on the flat. There's also acceleration away from the lights, but again the lack of gears is more significant, and can always be mitigated by jumping reds (joke).

Yea a Kg here and there shouldn't mean alot to me - excess weight carried by the rider is probably a bigger issue to be fair.

I just thought as there is very little mechanical on a fixie there shouldn't be too much to go wrong and therefor buying cheap wouldn't be a huge disadvantage ?

again thanks for the obs guys.

There is that although stuff could still go wrong with the likes of the wheels, the bottom bracket and the headset.

Yeah cheap wheels will go out of true quickly. The hubs won't run well after a while and will be difficult to adjust correctly, BB will freeze up. These bits and pieces cost money. Best to save up and buy quality

There should be a sub topic in Cycling called Fixies/Fixers/FixedWheel whatever. While I appreciate that it's the next rubik's cube the level of discussion on it is getting a bit tedious. There I've said it.

some of us might think the same about roadies, carbon bikes and sojourns around wickla twice a week but then again we might just grow up and not bother looking at the posts if we're not interested.

To the OP's question - I would trust this guy a bit more - he sells good components and has some fixie bargains:

Woah there, the title or OP did not allude to it being a link to a fixie bike! Fixie posts seems to be dominating a lot of the chat lately.

Tiny's right I don't have one but as I said I appreciate it's popularity just to me they're "meh".

I must be alone in my opnions? :)

    sorry - I've officially woah'ed now ;) - was having a pre-lunch attack of the grumps

if you were to ask me, carbon should be banned from the images of beauty thread but people don't ask me things like that

Swings and roundabouts. One week it's fixies, one week it's roadies and every 5th week it's mtb.

Fine for those that try their hand at them all !

Yea sorry about that - I've fixed it though so nobody else falls into the same trap

I think there's always going to be topics people don't have an interest it, but I don't think there's anyway to mark every post unless you use tags, which is unwieldy. This is a cycling forum, so cycling topics are allowed, whatever flavour that may be imo. If you open a thread, and see that it doesn't interest you, just don't visit it again. I think fragmenting things just gets messy. If there's an area for fixie, is it just for the track, or for commuters, or for hipsters. Rith a 'road' section is that only for the Tunney's and Rogerb's (and Hungrycol's!) of the world etc etc... we can get on together I think :)

Alternately, just get into every aspect and then it's all good, now, where's that MTB I want to buy.... :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,833 ✭✭✭niceonetom

OP - i wouldn't touch that with yours tbh.

it's cheap, yes, but for that money you could probably get a nice set of wheels built and convert an old steel frame (if you can find one - it's getting more difficult). the result would probably be significantly better, i reckon.

if there are some amongst us who are tired of accidentally reading and then commenting upon things they're not actually that interested in, maybe we should do some segregation around here.

new forums would probably have to be created for MTB (sub-forums for xc, downhill, trials, etc), Road (divided into riding, euroness, racing results, etc), Commuting, Fixed-Gear (with sub-forums for track racing, commuting, hipster/douche talk, DIY, etc.), then of course we'd need the Recommend-me-a-bike forum, the upgraditis-support-forum, the look-at-the-bike-related-stuff-i-found-on-the-internet-forum...

Never commented on the bike. Just commented on the multitude of fixie talk around here.

Your "segregation" is a wee OTT. I'm saying that it might be good to have sub-topics on areas of greater interest: "Road & MTB", "Fixies & Commuting", "Racing" and go from there.

Really unnecessary in my view, it is not as if this forum is unmanageable as it is. Why would you put fixies in with commuting? What about people who do long cycles on them? Or race on the track?

For the same reason you put Road with MTB, i.e. no reason. It's just a manageable grouping.

I'm not saying it's all unmanageable. There are a lot of topics that fall off page one (even two) that may be of ongoing interest e.g. Tour Down Under got very little coverage here probably it falls off the page so quickly. There is a lot more traffic here than there used to be and I think it warrants some sub-topics/headings.

Whoa whoa!!!!!!! NOOO dont do that, you ever see the unipack bikes on egay?
They are notorious for their quality, they will fall apart on you and can become quite dangerous.

"I've bought these ****ty ToysRUs bikes in the past. They are the biggest waste of money! Products like these are directed at first time buyers that have no knowledge about bikes.
They are made of the cheapest materials possible and wont last you more than a month!
After the first few weeks the bottom bracket/ crank will start to creek and all the components will start getting out of line. Things will bend and snap off and you'll end up binning the whole thing.

Jokes aside from the earlier posts, do not purchase these types of bikes!
You'll only have to purchase a better bike in 1months time and be £200 out of pocket.

If your looking to get a cheap fixed gear try an 'off the peg' bike like a Fuji for £300. or you'll find 2nd hand Langsters on ebay/gumtree for £200. These are great bikes for starting out and they've got resale value if you decide that a fixed gear isnt for you or you want to upgrade.

Dont buy the ****ty ToysRUs bikes!"-Hybrid from Londonfgss
