    Civic
    1.6 Focus
    Colt

All generally very reliable if looked after and nice to drive

Colt would be my choice, warranty and long nct with this one, could get it below 2k as well.

If your a girl and want to go the tiny car route, get a Yaris.

Even the 1.0l is peppy enough, easily get 40mpg + on it and road tax is only 227e a year.Insurance will be dirt cheap too and they are very reliable.Cars I have listed already will be more fun to drive, but Yaris's are great A to B yokes

How about a Fiesta 1.25? Nice to drive, cheap to tax, insure & maintain.

Ford Focus is a nice car.
At the end of the day it all depends how much are you looking to spend on a car.
Almera- hate the way it looks (my opinion though, yours could be different)

My bro went that route after he passed his test, we all warned not go for his chosen car and turns out we were all wrong and the car has been very reliable.

He went with a Red Mg Zs 1.4.

Head gaskets in them tend to go after 50k, but its not the end of the world to replace them.He has 80k up on his ( over 40k done by himself ) and its going perfectly, its really good on fuel and quick for a 1.4 ( 101bhp )

We wanted him to get a Corolla

Can I ask whether you are a learner, given that this is your first car? If so, it might be best to get something cheaper (€2-€3K) like a Fiesta or Micra. If you have a licence already then the Focus would be a good purchase and worth spending the extra few quid.

The Ford focus is nice. Depending on how much you have to spend I would not go for the model prior to 2005. 2005 + is more modern. The Almera is a solid car and all you have to avoid is the members on here who will call it "JAP CRAP". :D

I had both a 2000(newer shape) Almera saloon and a 2005 Focus Zetec. Both great cars and If I had the choice now I would go for the Focus. Solid car with easier resale than a Nissan.

Cheapest one I could find was in Cork but its 1.6 litre. The torque level is not too high in the focus so its not going to be a rocket of a car.
