Curious to see see what the consensus is on Boards.

Is Fianna Fail's time finally up, or will the "Ah sure what alternatives are there?" attitude continue to prevail.

    Probably.

The second thing. Almost certainly. People are dumb.

It doesn't matter who you vote for, the government always get in.

If enough inbred and blind to the facts ("vote as your daddy and grandfather did ") FF supporters emigrate, they will be booted out.

Yes, they will be. Like 'The Mad Hatter' said, Irish people are dumb.

I've never voted for fianna fail and never will. Why aren't the poll results shown?

Fingers firmly crossed they wont be but a lot of people are of the "divil you know" opinion which has this country where it is today.

Ha Brian Cowen = Daftendirekt . Apt username. Fianna Fail using boards.ie to judge voters. Well it wont work due to the fact that what no one ever votes Fianna Fail they always seem to get elected. I put it down to the fact that Irish people are idiots. No Offence and also whats the alternative? New form of government ftw. What we need is one strong leader making laws without consultation to bring us into the future! :D

    I think they will

People are blaming them for the state of the economy. The economy is in the state it's in because of a global downturn. People are going as far as placing all the blame on Cowen, it makes no sense.

Who else would we vote in? Enda fcuking Kenny? The biggest bitch on the planet? With practically NO experience of being in government? No thanks!

Its not "will you vote FF" its "will FF be voted back in" . I think the Thread title and Poll title are causing confusion .I voted yes but meant no. I mean I voted no but meant yes. Wait are you sure Daftendirekt isnt Brian Cowen cause this is seeming more and more like a referendum the more I look at it.

Yep, I'd say they will and I've a sneaking suspicion that Michael Martin (can't type fadas ) will be next Taoiseach.

The Green Party will be decimated.

And for all those posting FF voters are dumb and only voting for family reasons, that's pretty arrogant imo!
Sure did you even vote as I'm remember so many threads on boards at the last election that' "I'm in college/work and now I can't vote on a Thursday, boo hoo..........."

Attack FF all you want, I'll even join you.
But don't call someone dumb just because you don't like their choice. Feckin childish!

People are blaming them for the state of the economy, because they failed utterly to prepare this country for the downturn. Global recession or not, FF have not been helping matters.

No, actually paying attention to current events and realising what is actually going on told me to say that.

And also, what could the government have done to prevent the global downturn affecting Ireland?

    Lol...

What people don't get is that Ireland becamer fat and ignorant during the celtic tiger. Instead of sitting on the back burner in Europe and taking all the handouts from the EU, we started pumping more and more resources into the EU and gave away all our fish, for what? a few euro for the farmers?

And whereas once upon a time, we had the likes of Whittaker in power, constantly promoting intrapreneurship and everyone knew what they were at. The only law enforcers were the unions - going on strike and what not.

Since 1997, we have simply throw money at everything that went wrong, constantly commissioning reports. So much now that there's rampant paedophiles in the clergy literally sexually abusing children and we're sitting on our hands waiting for .... a report?

We're throwing money at stuff and we dont even know what its for. All we know is there's a problem and we've been told we need a couple of million to fix it. We spent so long giving rights to people, and health and safety officers rampant all over the place and auditors here and there chasing after the little people - yet you have the likes of Sean Fitzpatrick and co. (ie. the financial regulator) just knit picking 100's of millions of people's deposits.

Why they ever put in a qualified barrister in as Miniter for Finance is beyond me. That ignorant fúckface couldnt even do his job as minister for children.

There is an alternative out there, but we're all so far up our own holes, and inbred from our grandparents that we've told Fianna Fáíl they have a God Given right to power. The alternative has been sitting on the backbenches for years. They've seen everything go wrong, and unfortunately the opposition are the only ones still in touch.

Better question would be, are the majority of voters still going to be ignorant to everything going on around them and vote the same way they always do regardless of policies, successes and failures of said party.... :pac:

Probably nothing. Better management of our own economy could have minimised the damage though.

My knowledge of economics leaves a lot to be desired, but hopefully someone else can tackle your question in more detail.

BS. This "global" downturn thing is the perfect cop out for the FF faithful. Basically washes their hands of any responsibility for mismanagement of the Irish economy.
We were first of the EU countries to enter recession and seems to from what I'm reading unemployment is rising far faster here than any other EU country. So go figure.
I just don't buy into blaming the "global donturn" entirely for Irelands economic woes.

And also, what could the government have done to prevent the global downturn affecting Ireland?

Simple....they should not have promoted the mad property speculation that has destroyed our banks (which granted has not been helped by the global financial meltdown).

FF gave tax breaks for property development (sec 23 etc) which meant Builders built masses of houses (taking out huge loans from the banks) which were then purchased by investors (mortgaging their own homes as collateral in some cases - more debt on the banks books) which then drove up the cost of houses - this meant people needed to be paid more to service jumbo mortagages (or get on the ladder) - this wiped out our competitiveness which had in effect created a very nice little export economy we'd started to build in the late 1990's.

So the country based on FF 'economic' policy was building and investing in building (apart from proper infrastructure) - so much so that building and related trades were 25% of GDP!!! Madness!! For an industry that can't produce exported good? How long were we going to sell houses to each other?

Once the financial market went into meltdown the Irish banks suddenly found themselves unable to pay the billions of euros in loan debts that exist because of their investment in the property industry. Developers have found that land they purchased is now worth half of what they paid for it and have no chance in hell of paying back their loans to the banks who will need to be nationalised.

The problem is that thanks to 10 years of FF mismanagment and promotion of the property bubble we have nada to fall back on.....no export industries of considerable, crap infrastructure, no ubiquitous broadband or WiFi and crippling taxes such as PRSI and VAT that hinder small businesses from starting and running at profits and a complete reliance on FDI (80-90% of our exports are from foreign companies based here) .....not to mention electricty costs which are ridiculous....and because of our high costs the likes of Dell have gone...taking another 5% of GDP with them.

And we now have to find billions of euros to run the country because tax revenues from property (now a dead duck) are gone. So we will struggle to pay the 'Social Partners' their benchmarking awards. And rightly (or wrongly) they will refuse to take the hit. Another great FF Policy!

So yeah....I think FF policy is to blame for the state of the economy......

....but I won't hold my breath as to whether they get less than 38% in the next election.....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,442 ✭✭✭Firetrap

I've never voted for them but have a nasty feeling that even if there was a general election in the morning, they'd get back in. Problem is that all politics is local. People might hate the two Brians and the other dimwits in the cabinet but it's not their name that appears on the ballot sheet. When it comes down to it, the TDs with safe seats would have to do something really really despicable to lose out in an election.

I was gonna try and defend their handling of the economy and the impact of the global economy, but I agreed with everything above.

Even if the property market provided a lot of jobs, the net result of the boom is now the recession and the banking crisis.

I voted FF in last few elections (and not for family reasons - My dad is a card carrying member of FG) not sure what i'll do in the next one at the moment.

The fact that at this point in time that 17% of people would still vote for FF tells it all. That's of young people inclined not to vote FF.

Even if an election were to be called tomorrow, in the middle of Ireland fall to pieces they would still get 30% of the vote, which is an embarrassing reflection of Irish people.

It's bull**** to suggest our problems are a result of the global downturn, they are made worse by it fair enough but by no means created by it. I'm not a supporter of any political party but I have been personally worried for years by the behaviour of our government, the huge waste and spending of money from a bubble that couldn't last. This government was mainly made up of Fianna Fail so that's where the axe should fall. It'll be a long long time before I could be convinced to vote for them. Enda Kenny isn't that great but given the hole Fianna Fail have put us in voting for your pet hamster might have been a better option.

Actually that really pissed me off even though I only had to go up the road. Elections should be held on a Saturday or Sunday only. Holding it on a Thursday when you know many students can't or won't vote is extremely undemocratic.

I (and many I have spoken to over the years) suspect thats why they do it partly.
The F.F. schites know that if the youth of this country even semi-mobilised and got up and voted, they would be so truly fcuked.
