my borther had a punto elx and wants to get the timing belt done. does he have to change the water pump when he is getting the belt done.

i got mine done around 12,000 miles ago and never changed the water pump. its just gone over the 100,000 miles and is also a punto

Best to get it done if its driven by the timing belt or its near the timing belt yeah. I would if i was him get it all done in 1 go less labour costs

but would be doing any damage to the engine if its not changed.

As sammy stated - if the water pump is driven by the belt then you should really consider having it replaced along with the belt. Not replacing it won't do any damage but if the water pump bearings collapse the damage done to the engine will be substantial. The only extra cost is the price of the pump, a litre or two of coolant and the extra time to physically replace the pump which is not a lot when compared to the cost of replacing the belt.

i'm just after reading on the fiat forum that its ok if you don't chage the water pump.

would ye get it changed if ye got the belt changed

Yes get it changed its only a few extra quid compared to a new engine if it fails

I'd give it serious consideration but only if the water pump is driven by the timing belt. If it isn't then no, I wouldn't.

Exactly my point if its fan belt driven then replace it when the fan belt needs doing if its timing belt driven then change it along with the timing belt

What year is the Punto? The potential consequenses vary greatly. If it's a mk1 Punto, then the ELX has a 16v engine which would certainly be wrecked if the waterpump failed and took the timing belt with it. If it's the mkII, then it has an 8v engine which is non interference so all it would need is a new timing belt, no other damage done. Having said all that, the extra cost in doing the water pump when you're doing the timing belt will be negligible, so it's worth getting it done.

In that case the biggest risk is that he'll have to fork out to get the timing belt redone. Personally, I'd still get it done for peace of mind.
