    Just wondering about digital odometers...

I drive a mercedes sprinter, which has a digital odometer like most modern vehicles. I was wondering, if a vehicle was ever clocked, is the original mileage still stored in the memory?

If so, is there an instrument test that that can show me what the original mileage was?

isint the mileage stored in the ECU, so if the clockes are replaced then the original mileage is displayed too?

i know with BMW you can have you key scanned at the dealers and it will reveal the original mileage no matter if the car was clocked or not.

got my key scanned on the X5 before while i was in keanes getting a check up.

I imagine that all information would be stored in the ECU alright. I will try that and find out if I can get my own key scanned too.

    thanks for the info.

The mileage is stored in the eeprom on the gauge cluster itself. (may vary in certain cars!)... Changed a faulty odometer on a punto and the mileage went from 80,000 to 22,000

Was it a 2nd hand odometre you put in that had 22k on it or did the Punto just pull the figure out of it's arse?

Except for they are well able to modify the mileage stored on the key too. :(

AFAIK modern BMWs have the mileage stored in a number of places in the car including the radio.
Changing the cluster will result in a dot appearing on the odometer. I would imagine that this idea would be used by most manufacturers!
A dealer should be able to tell what the correct mileage is or at the least, tell if there is something up! Service records should also help!
