Advice on Pigs

    Guys & Gals

I'm looking for some advice on very small-scale pig-farming. I've a small-holding (17 acres) on poor to average land and right now I'm in the middle of getting it back into working order again, it having not been farmed for many years except for some horses grazing it.

I've enrolled in REPS4 and that's financing work to secure the boundaries. I've planted a small orchard as part of REPS, and the land will be grazed by 1 - 2 year old cattle bought March / April and sold Oct / Nov.

This year I will be registering for Organic farming as I see this as a logical step forward with the small piece of land I have and how extensively it's farmed.

I'm thinking about buying some pigs to rear - mainly to have one myself for the freezer, but also to sell on a few to local butchers ......... Can anyone offer any good advice on this? I don't want to go headlong into the pig-rearing piece of the plan (the rest is straight-forward) without getting input from people who know this stuff, or have first-hand experience.
