Galway Drivers Seek Moratorium on Licences

Up to 300 taxi drivers gathered in Galway city to demand for a three-year moratorium on the issuing of new licences.

The drivers from Galway, Cork and Midland border counties said new regulations, which allowed large numbers of extra taxis onto the roads, have drastically reduced their incomes.

Addressing the group, the Chairman of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Frank Fahey said a moratorium was one of a number of proposals currently being considered by Government.

AdvertisementThe Commission for Taxi Regulation has said there had been a 48% reduction in applications for taxi licences since May last year.

It said any question of limiting the numbers of people operating in the market was a matter for the Government and the Oireachtas.

What does the Boards.ie's make of this? Do you find it would be a good / bad move given the ''Economic Climate''?

Stinks of socialism to be honest.

Let them go the same way as Dublin where you can actually walk past the beat up stinking corolla with the bumper tied on with string because you know there'll be something better along in a minute.

    Darwinism ftw.

Actually you just reminded me that I am racist when it comes to taxi drivers. I have in the last few months started looking for cabs with Dublin reg plates/white drivers so I can get a driver who knows where the hell he's going

    I was kidding man!:D

Is biz so bad that you're spending Saturday night on boards? I would have thought this would be the busy time for you lot.

Or as, the topic suggests, are there so many out there that it's not worth it for you?

I know very little about the taxi industry, I'm going to start with that.

I can see how people jumped at the idea of being a taxi driver. There was a time in this country where taxi drivers made a fortune. All they had to do was get their hands on a plate.

Everything changes, the recession will see less taxis used on a daily basis. The industry won't be the "easy ticket" people perceived it to be.

Enlighten the ignorant... just how easy is it to become a taxi driver now?

    I would expect:

Local knowledge test (not just the Sat Nav)
    Garda clearance cert
    Safe driving course

No point in stopping it, cos the greedy bastards would expect more tax payers money in compensation when applications were re-opened again.

Welcome to capitalism, letting supply and demand balance out.
Taxi drivers don't deserve any more consideration than shop owners, builders or any sole traders/self employed people.

Feck sake, it's just a guy and a car.... that's all.
It's an unskilled job that is accesable to a lot of people with no other prospects.

I agree with leaving it open. I wouldn't have a problem with a test to ensure they know where they are going in the area they plan to work though.
