Apple applications cannot connect to internet

    Hi,

I don't know much about Macs but I am having a problem with internet connections when using Apple applications on a Macbook.
It's my wife's Macbook and since she got it Safari has never been able to connect to the internet - no problem as I immediately downloaded firefox and it has worked flawlessly since. Other clues is that the weather widget does not update with internet data and quicktime cannot connect to look for updates.
Now she wants to use iTunes and has downloaded the latest version (8) the other day but it cannot connect to the iTunes store (never gets past "Accessing iTunes Store").

I'm guessing that there is some internet configuration setting wrong and I cannot find it.The network connection is through an Eircom Netopia router via WIFI.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks, Vertical

Sounds like the Mac is set up to use a proxy that it can not get to. All the apps you mention use the system wide proxy while Firefox does not.

Open System Preferences -> Network -> Proxies. If there is a proxy enabled, disable it and try accessing with safari to see if that solved the problem

OP, I had the exact same problem before (someone tried to fake the IP of the computer and this is how they were trying to do it) and Firefox worked fine at the time. Give this a shot.

    Success...

It was the proxy settings, it had "Automatic Proxy Configuration" ticked. I unticked and applied and now its all working.

Thanks everyone for your prompt help.

    Regards,

I have a similar problem at the moment, although I don't think the same cure will apply.
In the last few days Microsoft Messenger and Software Update have been unable to connect to the internet. I've been using both wireless and an ethernet connection.

Firefox and Transmission have no problems connecting to the internet.
Just tried Safari and that isn't loading any sites.

Only thing that I've done recently was use a 3 broadband dongle for a few days, but that's gone back to the shop now.

This all has me properly miffed
