Vietnam to China to Laos

We are planning on heading to Sapa in a week or so, are thought that we may pop into China for a week, to Kunming I think, before heading back to Laos. Has anyone done either of these border crossings? We're only really doing it for an extra stamp on the passport and to see a bit of China, so won't bother if it's too…
