Anyone know if it's possible to use the iPod functionality of the iPhone to play music through a USB connection to the PS3? I know the PS3 can detect and play from regular iPods, but it doesn't seem to detect the iPhone when it's connected.

No it can't. The iPhone, Touch and newest iPods dropped the disc mode that Sony & MS used to be able to use the play music files from.
Only iTunes can access music files from the newest iPods.

What ongarite said. My touch won't be read. All pre-Touch iPods, and possibly the newest nano, can be read.

Must get my iPod mini out.

Yar, it won't read my touch but it reads my 1st generation video. God bless obsolete technology!
