Weather-proofing connections

What's the normal protocol for weather-proofing connections? I've seen the point where the wire connects to the LNB being insulated with tape, what type of tape should I use. The reason why I ask is I recently readjusted my dish and while I was at it I wrapped the connections with electrical tape, all was grand initially, but after a few days the signal began to deteriorate. Strangely enough all is now fine after removing the tape.

Self amalgamating tape.......electrical tape will allow leakages and corrose your connections
