Power V Strength

    Not sure if this has been done before but something I was thinking about last night in the gym. Obviously you have your typical body builder type, huge muscle mass that lifts hefty weights etc but on the other hand there was a guy there last night, probably about 6ft and 80kg. Technique was amazing doing dead lifts, tricep dips, pull ups etc. He must have had about 25kg of additional weight on a belt doing sets of tricep dips. Looked very powerful but not bulky.

    So what is the correlation between power and strength. Per pound of body weight this guy was a lot more powerful then some of the big guys. Does it boil down to technique?? Or is it just different for everyone??

    Thoughts?

    Good technique does not equal power. Just because the guy was strong with good form doesn't mean he was any more powerful than a bigger lad.

    It's too complex for one sitting, but basically and really, really simplified Power=work/time the work in this case being say 100kgs of iron. If two guys can, for example, clean 100kgs, the most powerful of the two guys will be the one who can move the weight faster.

    So P=W/t

    To use your example, lets say a big lad weighs 120kgs and another weighs 80kgs. Now if the 120kgs lad can clean 120kgs and the 80kgs guy can clean 100kgs (let's assume at the same speed), the bigger guy is still more powerful because the W in the equation is greater, the t remains the same. The smaller man could be said to be more powerful once the t element is significantly smaller as to give a higher value of P.

    That clear it up?

    Cheers for the response. Obviously the bigger guy is more powerful overall but I what I was trying to get was, if we use your equation and divide by each guys weight then on a per kg/per lb basis the smaller lad is stronger...

    Anyway my point was not to get into a debate around who is more powerful etc?? Rather to discuss training methods, theories behind increasing strength without necessarily putting on a lot of weight/muscle mass...
